About Mrs. Bertha Knight Landes: First Woman Mayor of Seattle (1926-1928)

Mrs. Bertha Knight Landes: First Woman Mayor of Seattle (1926-1928)

Bertha Knight Landes made history as the first woman elected mayor of a major American city. Landes, who won by the largest voting margin the city had ever seen in a mayoral race, served as mayor of Seattle, Washington from 1926-1928. . She was a leader for women's organizations, including the League of Women Voters, and served as president of the Seattle Federation of Women's Clubs, encouraging women to get involved in politics-what she considered their "natural sphere." During her time serving on Seattle's city council and her term as mayor, Landes was dedicated to eradicating the corruption that had infiltrated local government during the Prohibition era.

This special presentation brings Mayor Landes to life through storytelling and re-enactment by actor Debbie Dimitre.

Debbie Dimitre is a Northwest storyteller and actor who has been inspiring and educating audiences of all ages since 1987 in costume and in character. Through careful research for her dramatic and historically accurate scripts, Debbie draws on her theater training from University of Oregon and Portland State University to bring to life outstanding women in American history. Some of her first-person portrayals include such women as Emily Dickenson, Nellie Bly, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Annie Oakley, just to name a few. Debbie has performed for the Seattle Folklife Festival, historical societies, schools and colleges, and has served on the board of the Seattle Storytellers Guild.
