Local Roots Presents

Monthly musical showcase

Local Roots Presents

Local Roots Music NW produces a syndicated FM radio show, a television concert series, live music events and festivals showcasing music from around the Pacific Northwest.

Originally a Sunday night radio program on KMUZ-FM in Salem, Local Roots was founded in 2013 by local musician and entrepreneur Robert Richter. The show features original recordings from local musicians, as well as over 400 concerts recorded live at the monthly Local Roots Live Series (2014-2019).

Now syndicated on three FM stations in the NW and co-hosted by fellow musician Ronnie Carrier, more than 1,000 musicians have had their music played on the Local Roots radio show. In addition to Sunday evenings on KMUZ, the show airs twice a week on KCIW 100.7 FM in Brookings, OR and Mon-Fri, 8am - 10am on KMWV 98.3 FM in Salem, OR.

Local Roots has added many programs since its inception to benefit local musicians, including recording monthly live concerts for radio broadcast and a weekly television show featuring local musicians airing on public access television in both Portland and Salem.

Other programs include local musicians hosting monthly events, seminars on booking and other important issues for musicians, annual festivals, compilations and songwriting contests. Local Roots also produces a free weekly newsletter with information on NW musicians and upcoming events.

True North Duo

Indie-grass quartet

True North Duo

Cofounders of powerhouse acoustic quartet Kristen Grainger & True North, singer-songwriters Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel's duo performances resonate deeply with audiences listening for well-crafted songs, skillful instrumentation, and beautiful vocals. The duo's onstage chemistry sparks and smokes as they bring to life their songs about the extraordinary moments in ordinary life, opening and warming hearts wherever they go.

A songwriter whose star is rising, Kristen was named, alongside Brandi Carlile and Dolly Parton, one of the Women Who Wrote Our 2020 Soundtrack by The Bluegrass Situation. She won the 2020 USA Songwriting Competition (folk), and she has won or been a finalist in some of the nation's most prestigious songwriting contests, including Telluride Bluegrass Festival (CO), Wildflower Festival (TX), Merlefest (NC), and Kerrville Folk Festival (TX).

An accomplished singer-songwriter who toured nationally as a solo artist, Dan is also a luthier who handcrafts musical instruments, including most of the ones he and Kristen perform with, that look and sound beautiful. His superb skills, particularly on guitar, both flat-pick and finger style, give True North's songs their driving groove.

Their 2020 release, Ghost Tattoo, was named one of the Top 20 Albums of 2020 by Folk Alley's Listeners Choice, hitting #1 on folk radio charts for both albums and singles. According to Folk Alliance International, Ghost Tattoo was the second most-aired album on folk radio in 2020.

Marianne Flemming

Hippy chick blues

Marianne Flemming

Originally from south Florida, Flemming has been a professional musician for more than 30 years winning numerous songwriting and "Best of" awards for her quirky perspective on the rich tapestry of American music and its global reach. Varying between a jazz-inflected, sinuous voice reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones and Natalie Merchant, the solid folk sensibility of Janis Ian, and the straight-ahead emotionalism of Patty Griffin, songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Marianne Flemming has been writing and performing memorable lyrics and melodies for many years.

Having toured across the country and played many clubs and concerts, as both solo performer and in previous bands, she has been her own voice yet clearly has paid homage to the music which has inspired her over time.

Marianne's new recording, Across the Hemisphere, recorded over the past few years under lockdown and during unrest.
