About Early Fishing on the Columbia River

Early Fishing on the Columbia River

Join us as we follow the fish on their epic journey from the mouth of the "Big River" to Celilo Falls. Historians Chuck Rollins and Steve Lehl will discuss the various methods used by the indigenous peoples and early commercial fishermen on the Columbia, including harvesting, catching, processing and canning fish. Enjoy historical photos from the 1880s to 1950s and learn the risks our early ancestors braved and the consequences and rewards that resulted.

Steve Lehl is the vice president of Crown Point Country Historical Society. He is a retired garbageman who loves collecting old photos and memorabilia of the Columbia River, from its mouth at Astoria to its source in Canada. He has put together many historical programs using his collection over the years.

Chuck Rollins is president of Crown Point Country Historical Society, a retired logger, and author of The Loggers: How They Saw It. He has spent years documenting Corbett history and is a passionate rockhound who loves collecting rocks from the Missoula Flood.
