About Back Stage Bar

The saga of the seven stories

Just wait 'til you check out this cool spot, the loftiest place to play pool and drink a beer in all the land. Step inside and have a gander up, waaaaay up — this hidden room behind the Bagdad Theater's screen stretches an incredible seven stories from floor to ceiling!

From 1930s vaudeville behind-the-scenes area to 1970s arthouse and hippie hangout, this place has a great history. We renovated it from top to bottom to become Hawthorne's most happening spot to play a round or two of 8-ball, relax before or after a movie or just stop by for a beer. And don't miss the huge 20-by-20-foot mural depicting the various tales, characters and memories from the Bagdad since its opening in 1927.

Back Stage Bar allows pets at our sidewalk seating only.

After you've stretched to new heights gazing at the walls and ceiling, have a look at the 130-year-old cherrywood bar, which was salvaged from downtown Portland’s iconic Lotus Cardroom upon its closing in 2016. Crafted in the 1880s by the Brunswick Company in Chicago, the bar was shipped to America’s West Coast by a rather circuitous route at sea: around Cape Horn in South America. After an illustrious time spent at the Lotus, we claimed it as our own, replacing the bar in Back Stage in October 2017. The bar removed from Back Stage is likely to resurface in a future McMenamins project.

History

For years, this cavernous space, which reaches an altitude that still may be the highest in Portland's Southeast district, was never meant to be seen by the watchful eyes of countless audiences on the other side of the proscenium. On performance nights, it was a place of orchestrated pandemonium, the nerve center for the machinations of the Bagdad's vaudeville productions: lights, sound effects, curtains, sets, backdrops, and acres of rope, rigging and catwalks...
