About R.J. Marx Quartet
R.J. Marx, Saxophonist
Saxophonist R.J. Marx's love affair with jazz began in the 1970s. Inspired by the sounds of modern jazz legends like John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, and Wayne Shorter, he studied with Chicago's legendary Fred Anderson and honed his craft at Berklee College of Music. After a musical hiatus, Marx returned to performing in the late 1990s, continuing his studies with celebrated jazz pianist Pete Malinverni and saxophonist Ralph Lalama.
Throughout his career in journalism, Marx maintained his lifelong passion for jazz. He writes regularly about the genre on his Substack and is a member of the Jazz Journalists Association. Since moving to Oregon's North Coast in 2015, he has established himself as a prolific performer and educator. Marx is a member of the popular swing band Chelsea LaFey and the Salt Shakers, and his groups have played at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest. His quartet recorded their debut album in 2017.
