About Station Island Quartet
Station Island
Quartet brings together a vibrant new Northwest ensemble of musicians to shape
a special Celtic repertoire for RCT's Irish Sundays. Corvallis fiddler Shari
Ame and Vancouver cellist and mandolinist Jesse Schafer create a textured and
playful soundscape, ranging from soaring and euphoric to dark and grumbly, with
influences ranging far and wide. They are joined by Corvallis-based Tracy
Daugherty, who brings both drive and melodic range to his bodhran, and Marjorie
Sandor, who has found a home in the dark rich chords of a guitar in DADGAD
tuning. The band's name pays homage to the great Irish poet Seamus Heaney, and
his poem, Station Island, about an ancient pilgrimage site in
County Donegal, where, according to legend, St. Patrick found a portal to
Purgatory. "Strike your note!" writes the poet, and together, they do.
