About Oregonians Experiencing Archaeology
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of
the Oregon Archaeological Society (OAS), take a behind-the-scenes look at the
research and field work that leads to new episodes of OPB's Oregon
Experience program, featuring archaeological insights. From revelations
about Chinese cowboys and doctors to early-twentieth-century logging families,
archaeologists are making significant new conclusions about Oregon history.
In this special presentation, archaeologist Chelsea Rose,
OPB Oregon Experience executive producer Arya Surowidjojo, and OPB
producer Christie Goshe share historical context and on-the-ground stories
about how the documentaries are made - including new footage from the 2026
Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA) summer field
school. OAS representatives will be on hand to share information about how you
can get involved.
Chelsea Rose is the director of SOULA and a historical
archaeologist who focuses on the American West. She is a former member of the
Oregon Heritage Commission and is currently on the board of trustees for the
Southern Oregon Historical Society. Rose is co-founder and a principal
investigator with the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project, was a
guest co-editor of the Oregon Historical Quarterly issue dedicated to
the Chinese diaspora, and co-edited Chinese Diaspora Archaeology in North
America, from the University Press of Florida.
Arya Surowidjojo is a documentary filmmaker,
visual journalist and public media executive. His multilayered upbringing in
Indonesia shaped a lifelong curiosity for histories, the arts, and Indigeneity.
Arya is currently the executive producer of the OPB series Oregon
Experience. He is also the co-creator of Superabundant, OPB's
award-winning digital series exploring the food systems of the Pacific
Northwest.
Christie Goshe (she/they) is a documentary
producer, cinematographer, editor and a key creative partner in the OPB Oregon
Experience and SOULA archaeology series. Christie holds a BA with a
concentration in media studies from Bennington College.
