Generations of Indigenous artists carved out a place for Native American art in North American culture and society during the 20th century. To do so, they confronted fundamental questions of how to use art for social and political goals, with each generation benefiting from the work of those who came before. History Professor Nicolas G. Rosental presents his research on how Indigenous artists worked to validate Native American culture and rewrite North American history from an Indigenous perspective through innovative, meaningful, and beautiful works of art.
Nicolas G. Rosenthal is Chair and Professor of History at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he teaches Indigenous, American West, and United States History. He received his BA and MA from the University of Oregon and PhD in History from the University of California, Los Angeles. Rosenthal is the author of Painting Native America: Indigenous Artists in the Twentieth Century.
