The Green Rushes are Kate Gregory (fiddle, vocals), Brian Ó hAirt (concertina, accordion, vocals), and Richie Rosencrans (guitar, bouzouki, vocals). The three formed their friendship and musical connection through the Portland Irish music community, playing at sessions, dances, and sharing late nights of tunes, though their connections stretch back before that. Kate and Brian first met when Brian taught a workshop in Boulder, CO, where Kate was living at the time. Going to that workshop was a catalyst for her Irish music journey, and afterward she started playing at Irish sessions. Richie and Kate had mutual friends across the country who put them in touch when Kate moved to Portland in 2021. Richie invited her to join the Monday night session at TC O'Leary's and the rest is history. In this collaboration, Kate, Richie, and Brian each bring a wealth of performing experience, deep familiarity and knowlege of Irish music, and love for the community that surrounds it to create an inviting, warm, and rhythmic sound. They get their name from the reel "The Bunch of Green Rushes." Kate is from Colorado, and since moving to Portland has collaborated in multiple music projects, including Kate and the Lads, the Emerald Reelers, and in a duo project with multi-instrumentalist Baron Collins-Hill. She plays multiple styles of traditional music, especially Irish and American Old-time music, has played on stages across the country with her duo project with Brooklyn based cellist Brendan Hearn. Brian is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, and Irish Gaelic speaker hailing from the upper Midwest. An All-Ireland champion singer since 2002, Brian has since gone on to collaborate and record with Chicago-based ensemble Bua and singing legend Len Graham of Glenarm, Co. Antrim. Richie Rosencrans is a sought after backer and singer. Self-taught as a guitarist and songwriter, he began playing Irish music while living in New Hampshire. He is a founding member of the Portland-based Irish band Na Rosai and performs frequently in and around Portland with multiple collaborations.
