About A Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Barns

A Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Barns

Get ready for a barnstormer of a History Pub! Join Washington State Architectural Historian and barn expert Michael Houser on a journey through the history of barns in the Pacific Northwest. This practical field guide lecture draws on Houser's vast knowledge as the manager of Washington State's award-winning Heritage Barn Program. Learn everything you've ever wanted to know about barns, including the many parts of a barn, how to identify and date various barn types, and different construction methods, from heavy timber and logs to laminated beams and various truss systems.

These events are open to everyone interested in Pacific Northwest history, and beyond! Often co-sponsored by local or state historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers, historians and documentaries expounding on topics from indigenous history to the birth of Portland, early explorers to hop growing, and on and on! It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
