About The Real “Boys in the Boat” – A Daughter Remembers

The Real “Boys in the Boat” – A Daughter Remembers

The critically acclaimed non-fiction novel The Boys in Boat, by Daniel James Brown, is the story of the University of Washington eight-oar rowing team that won the 1936 Olympic gold medal in Germany. The 2023 Hollywood film adaptation sparked new interest in this incredibly history. Join Judy Rantz Willman, daughter of UW crew member Joe Rantz, for an explanation of the book's genesis, reflections on the movie version, archival film footage of the actual Olympic race, and personal insight into this inspiring story.

Judy Rantz Willman is the daughter of Joe Rantz, one of the original "boys in the boat". Judy grew up in Lake Forest Park, Washington, and graduated from UW with a Bachelor of Science in home economics education and has a background in writing.
