About Smugglers, Rum Runners and Tunnels

Smugglers, Rum Runners and Tunnels

"Smugglers, Rum Runners, and Tunnels" will explore some of the most exciting and tumultuous times in Tacoma's past. Chris Staudinger of Pretty Gritty Tours delves into the history of smugglers and rum runners who brought illegal contraband into Tacoma during the era of alcohol prohibition. The secret hatches, tunnels, and schemes used to sneak liquor, booze, and people into the city under the cover of darkness will be pried open for you to peek inside. Chris shares some of the best stories and wildest mysteries that made Tacoma a major hub for bootlegging in the early 20th century.

Chris Staudinger has been a tour guide in Tacoma for seven years, covering the underrepresented history of the Pacific Northwest. He spent over ten years as a travel writer and an investigative travel journalist for Expedia, USA Today, and the BBC, before establishing Pretty Gritty Tours here in Tacoma.

These events are open to everyone interested in Pacific Northwest history, and beyond! Often co-sponsored by local or state historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers, historians and documentaries expounding on topics from indigenous history to the birth of Portland, early explorers to hop growing, and on and on! It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
