Pub Choir

Pub Choir

"Utterly, utterly wonderful" - quote from the real Kate Bush.

Some people are born as musical legends. For everybody else, there’s Pub Choir. An Aussie-now-global sensation, Pub Choir proves that a room of total strangers can actually agree on something for 90 minutes! Led by the human-sunbeam, Astrid Jorgensen, audiences of everyday people are lovingly bullied into harmonic greatness and transformed into an incredible choir for one night only. Don't believe us? Pub Choir has had the tick of approval from Kate Bush, Mariah Carey, The Killers, Sir Barry Gibb, BBC World News... even Vogue Magazine, because joy looks good on you, FYI.

Pub Choir is here to prove that singing really IS for everybody. Are you worried your singing voice is terrible? It probably is, BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER. Being dead average should never stop you from having a lovely time. And we are always better when we work together. Got a mouth? Bring it, grab a ticket, and Pub Choir will do the rest.

Astrid Jorgensen

MMus, Grad. Dip. Ed. (Sec.), B.A.

Astrid Jorgensen is a Brisbane-based choral conductor, composer, producer, and presenter who is teaching the world to sing. Founder and director of ‘Pub Choir ®’ and it’s online adaptation ‘Couch Choir’, Astrid has become one of the most recognisable faces in the world of community music making.

Armed with a quick wit and an unquenchable enthusiasm for singing, Astrid has delivered her unique music lessons to over 300,000 people worldwide since Pub Choir’s inception in March 2017. Astrid’s work has been endorsed by the likes of Mariah Carey, Kate Bush, KISS, The Cranberries, Sir Barry Gibb, and she has shared stages with such music heavyweights as The Rolling Stones, Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, and members of Powderfinger.

Astrid’s ability to enchant audiences and guide untrained singers to musical greatness has been featured extensively in world media including the BBC World News, the New York Times, Australian Story, and Vogue Magazine. Additionally, under Astrid’s leadership Pub Choir has raised over $300,000 for charity since 2018, for which Astrid was named the 2019 QLD Emerging Philanthropist Of The Year. In 2020 she was a nominee for QLD Young Australian Of The Year and in 2021, Astrid was named one of the 40-under-40 Most Influential Asian Australians.

Astrid was a co-creator, co-host, and consultant executive producer of ‘Australia’s Biggest Singalong!’. Along with Julia Zemiro, Miranda Tapsell, and Mark Seymour (of the Hunters & Collectors), the 2 hour, world-first TV broadcast saw Astrid simultaneously teach a live audience and over 200,000 viewers at home around Australia to perform in 3-part vocal harmony, live on SBS Television on June 5th, 2021. She has also worked extensively with the Australian Broadcast Company as a live radio producer, and as the facilitator of their 2020 national TV campaign, ‘I Am Australian’ featuring Olivia Newton-John and Human Nature.

“Watching Astrid work was a revelation and a joy.” – Paul Kelly

“We loved Pub Choir. Singing along to a banger of a song with a massive crowd of people will always be a life-affirming delight. But what elevated the experience was that director/choir leader/all-round legend Astrid Jorgensen was hilarious.” – The Music (Review from Splendour In The Grass)

About Mission Theater

Experience a slice of Portland history. What is now known simply as “the Mission” was originally home to the Swedish Mission Covenant congregation in the early 20th century, and despite its staid, buttoned up appearance, this place now hosts live music, video dance nights and special events on select nights each month.

History

The location that serves as one of McMenamins favorite neighborhood theater pubs was the locus of great spiritual zeal beginning in the 1890s. That's when the Swedish Evangelical Mission established its church here....

From a church to a theater-pub to event space, the Mission's history ain't exactly saintly. Click here for more info!
