Performances by: Homeboy Sandman

Thanks to his inventive flows, literate lyrics, and dry sense of humor, Homeboy Sandman emerged as one of the most original, prolific, underground rappers of the late 2000s through the 2020s. With verbal styles ranging from vitriolic screeds to stilted stream-of-consciousness narratives, his songs often criticize the conventions of hip-hop in addition to examining societal issues and lighter subjects such as the joy of healthy eating. After making a name throughout the underground New York hip-hop scene with independent releases such as 2008's Actual Factual Pterodactyl, Sandman received wider exposure when he signed to California's Stones Throw label during the early 2010s and released acclaimed albums such as 2012's First of a Living Breed and 2014's Hallways. Sandman has also released collaborations with Aesop Rock (several EPs beginning with 2015's Lice) and Edan (2018's Humble Pi), with additional releases produced by Quelle Chris (2020's Don't Feed the Monster) and Illingsworth (2022's There in Spirit).

Vursatyl

Soulful Hip-hop

Vursatyl

Vursatyl is an MC, singer/songwriter, best known for being a frontman for the Portland, Oregon-based Hip Hop group, Lifesavas. His lyrics are smart, sharp and delivered with a complexity in flow that would make even Charlie Parker proud to know him, all without losing any accessibility. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Vursatyl can also sing, direct a full band, and construct vocal harmonies of an extraordinary and unique nature. A perfect example of this appears on his classic hit, HelloHiHey from Lifesavas' album, Spirit in Stone, where all vocals were performed and conceived by Vursatyl.

All singing aside, he's widely known as one of the best MC's in independent Hip Hop and has toured internationally with De La Soul, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, The Coup, and Lyrics Born and has been specially featured on music with Smif-n-Wesson, Dead Prez, Camp Lo, Galactic, Blackalicious, Fishbone, Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, and many other Artists. As a part of Lifesavas, Vursatyl has received critical praise in the press, from Rolling Stone to XXL, including receiving the esteemed Chairman's Choice title. Vursatyl is also currently an integral part of Blackalicious' live show and has toured internationally and extensively with them over the past several years.

Vursatyl has just released the first of three solo projects. This initial installment, Crooked Straights, is already being heralded as a "Hip Hop classic" in the tradition of J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest, and Slum Village. Remixes have been done by Vitamin D, Jake One, and more are currently in the works. DJ Maseo, of De La Soul fame, also did a mix of Crooked Straights, which is just becoming available. With two more full-length albums ready to quickly follow, Vursatyl will be touring internationally as a solo artist, while promoting and performing new material from his current catalog of soulful Hip Hop.

Cool Nutz & DJ Fatboy

Growing up in Northeast Portland, OR, Terrance Scott pka Cool Nutz always kept his eyes on the prize. Hip-Hop culture had always played a huge role in his life, but at no point did he think that Hip-Hop culture and business would mix to put food on the table.

Using Run DMC's "Rock Box" as his initial inspiration, Cool Nutz teamed up with childhood friend Bosco Kante to start their pursuit of the dream. From the early days basement studio, to tours of Europe, Cool Nutz has represented Portland Hip-Hop not only on a local level, but has carried the city on his back on a global level.

From the vocal booth to the boardroom, Cool Nutz and Bosko went from aspiring artist and producer to the heads of independent powerhouse record label Jus Family Records. Using Jus Family Records as the outlet to release albums from Cool Nutz, it was also the vehicle to release titles from G-Ism, Maniac Lok, Izaya, Luni Coleone & Cool Nutz, D.B.A., and Kenny Mack.

About Mission Theater

Experience a slice of Portland history. What is now known simply as “the Mission” was originally home to the Swedish Mission Covenant congregation in the early 20th century, and despite its staid, buttoned up appearance, this place now hosts live music, video dance nights and special events on select nights each month.

History

The location that serves as one of McMenamins favorite neighborhood theater pubs was the locus of great spiritual zeal beginning in the 1890s. That's when the Swedish Evangelical Mission established its church here....

From a church to a theater-pub to event space, the Mission's history ain't exactly saintly. Click here for more info!
