OMSI Science Pub: Ancient Superpowers: A Look Into Prehistoric Bones and What They Tell Us

with Nico Spadafora, paleontologist, professional tracker and wilderness educator

People think of dinosaurs and other extinct animals as "dead ends" or failed designs in a world full of success stories, however, this is not the case. Most, if not all of these animals are success stories in themselves! The famously savage Tyrannosaurus rex, for example, was actually a careful, cunning predator and sauropods like Dreadnoughtus may have been terrifying hulks! In this talk, paleontologist Nico Spadafora will look into the "superpowers" that set some of these prehistoric animals apart. With a mixture of Mesozoic dinosaurs and Cenozoic megafauna, he will talk about all things from brain to brawn that make these ancient creatures awe inspiring.

Nico Spadafora is the owner and lead paleontologist of The Fossil Team, an educational company which he and his wife Haley started in 2016. He has been studying paleontology for nearly two decades, but really started focusing on the nitty gritty in his early teens. He dove head first into the scientific literature of paleontology and his knowledge and skills earned him an internship at the Oregon Zoo where he studied the anatomy, behaviors, and traits of elephants, lions, rhinos, and many other animals. Later he worked as a professional tracker and wilderness educator with Trackers Earth following the trails of bears, cougars, elk, and deer. Nico is currently writing a book on the behavior of cenozoic animals such as woolly mammoths, short faced bears, and Smilodon, the famed sabertooth cat. Other than being a nerd for paleontology, Nico enjoys drawing, playing video games, hiking the vast landscapes of the PNW, and snuggling his two cats Indiana Jones and Short Round. You can follow Nico's paleo happenings on Twitter @TheFossilTeam or on Instagram @the.fossil.teampdx or visit his website at www.fossilteam.com.
