Climate Change and Megafires: An Oregon Story

Human induced climate change has been influencing global weather patterns for the last few decades, increasing the incidence of droughts, hurricanes, floods, forest fires, and the severity of winter storms. Referred to as anomalous events for several years, their frequent and recent occurrence has assumed an alarming regularity that the scientific community is calling the new normal. This presentation will address wildfires in Oregon that have grown in size and regularity in the twenty-first century that are clearly establishing new expectations for the future of the region's climate. During the author's lifetime, beginning as a foreman on fire crews in the 1960s to the acceleration of megafires a half century later, Oregonians are reckoning with the quickening pace of wildfires that present new challenges with each passing season.
