Lindsay Clark

English folk & country

Lindsay Clark

Lindsay Clark finds balance between traditional and english folk, country, and her own version of experimental folk that seems to come from her soul. Exquisite and pitch perfect, her music speaks of quiet revelation, with a background of (usually her own) multi-tracked vocal arrangements. With influences ranging from the Beach Boys, Elizabeth Cotton, Joni Mitchell, appalachian folk, her classical upbringing, and her father's record collection, she blends many worlds into a uniquely warm sound. She has carved out a vibrant place as an artist with a penchant for poetry, rich harmony, and and a style of self-taught fingerpicking influenced by Nick Drake, John Fahey, and others. Popmatters called Crystalline (2018) "a rare exhibition of the weight that minimalism can bear in contemporary, reflective folk music." Atwood Magazine called the first single, Little Dove, "a piece of poetry in and of itself."

Originally from the small gold rush town of Nevada City, CA, she now resides in Portland, OR. After relocating to Portland in 2009, she self-released two albums, recorded in Sellwood with Sean Ogilvie (Laura Gibson). Her sound has been described as “folk with angelic vocals washing over smooth edges” (1859 Magazine). She has shared the stage with musicians such as Alela Diane, Nat Baldwin (Dirty Projectors), Ryan Francesconi (Joanna Newsom), Laura Gibson, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Her most recent effort was engineered and co-produced last year with Jeremy Harris (Vetiver/Devendra Banhart). “Crystalline” was released in September 2018 via boutique German label Oscarson. She is currently writing, with plans to record a new album in 2020.

Alexis Mahler

Pop orchestra

Alexis Mahler

Alexis Mahler grew up in Marquette, Michigan. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance and Music Education from Lawrence Conservatory of Music where she studied under Dr. Samantha George. In college, she began studying the cello and found opportunities to perform on both instruments throughout her undergraduate work. After graduation, Alexis became the director of the Upper Peninsula Youth Orchestra at Northern Michigan University and founded the local pop orchestra Eclettico before leaving the shore of Lake Superior in 2015 and venturing west.

She currently teaches private violin and cello lessons at the Community Music Center in Southeast Portland and is a teaching artist with the Bravo Youth Orchestras in North Portland. While she loves playing classical chamber music and symphonies, she also enjoys performing in more alternative settings and ensembles, and is currently experimenting with writing her own songs, some of which appear on her first solo EP, Low Moon. As a cellist, she enjoys collaborating with fellow songwriters in Oregon, California, and back home in Michigan. Alexis has always loved teaching music, and she truly believes in the power and importance of making music accessible to people of every age, experience, and style. In the rare moments Alexis is not creating, absorbing, or discussing something musical, you might find her spending time in nature or exploring the beautiful city of Portland.

Johanna Kunin

Pop & Rock

Johanna Kunin

Johanna Kunin's music is as hypnotic as snow falling on water, at once vast and muted, at once anchored and unmoored. Childhood afternoons spent poring over field guides and humid Minnesota summers whiled away exploring the Boundary Waters cultivated an early fascination with the natural world and her place in it. But instead of becoming a naturalist, Kunin gravitated toward all kinds of music, singing with the Minnesota Opera Company as a child, holing herself up as a teenager playing Chopin, then getting a jazz education during her college years in Seattle. She was in her twenties by the time she began to write songs, happily discovering a medium through which she could combine her interest in the natural world with music. Her first few demos yielded surprising returns, earning her a grant, and bringing her to the attention of producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists) who went on to record her first album, Clouds Electric (2006). Declared "one of the best albums of 2006," (Chris Douridas, KCRW), Clouds Electric had Johanna out touring with the likes of Robyn Hitchcock and Horse Feathers. By 2012, she had moved to Portland, OR and released a second record, Hidden Systems, under the moniker Bright Archer, and was beginning a career as a side-woman in other bands like Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Laura Gibson, and Loch Lomond. Although this took her on a needed break from the inward focus of her own music for several years, she continued writing all the while. Now, she looks forward to letting some new songs see the light of day. She plans to make a new recording late in 2016.
