Presented by Dr. Tracy Prince, PSU Research Professor
Join us to learn forgotten moments in Oregon's Native American
history and how Oregon’s Native art differs from that of British Columbia,
Alaska, and Washington. Dr. Tracy Prince, PSU Research Professor, explains the
history of tribal decimations faced by Oregon and how Native American cultural
and artistic expressions have survived those decimations. Tribes in Oregon have
expressed artistry via basketry, canoes, longhouses, burial platforms, rock
art, and beadwork (on clothing, necklaces, headdress and cradleboards), and
contemporary artists’ sculptures, paintings, and weavings are internationally
About the Presentation:
PSU Historian, Dr. Prince has uncovered completely forgotten
Native American, Chinese, and women’s history while researching her books: Portland's
Goose Hollow and co-authored Notable Women of Portland and Portland's
Slabtown. She has given talks throughout the state on Native American Art
of Oregon as a speaker for Oregon Humanities and Oregon Parks and Recreation.
These monthly, free events are open to everyone interested in Oregon and Pacific Northwest history. Co-sponsored by like-minded historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers and historians who expound on topics from Lewis and Clark to shipwrecks, hop growing to women pioneers and far, far beyond. It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
