African Apes

African Apes

Humanity’s closest relatives – chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos – are nearer to extinction than ever before. Their populations have long been declining due to increased habitat loss and exploitation. Habitat loss, long considered the greatest environmental threat in Africa, continues to loom, particularly as the palm oil industry is now rapidly expanding in Africa. But new threats are arising. The bushmeat industry is far removed from subsistence hunting that was common generations ago – the bushmeat crisis is now the greatest danger to the existence of great apes. Meat of apes and other endangered species is smuggled out of the forests and sold as a delicacy worldwide, with an estimated 180,000 pounds illegally entering the United States every year. In addition, the illegal trade in live wildlife continues unabated, with baby chimps and gorillas stolen from their mothers in the wild and smuggled to inhumane zoos and wealthy private collectors. The devastating effects of these threats have been well documented, providing clear evidence that they endanger the very existence of great apes.

In this talk, Gregg Tully, the Executive Director of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), will explain how habitat loss, bushmeat hunting, and the illegal wildlife trade are decimating populations of endangered apes. With a unique perspective on conservation of great apes, he will discuss the impact of rescue and rehabilitation centers on species preservation in Africa.

About the speaker:
Gregg earned a Ph.D. in animal behavior from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2006. He then turned his attention to the nonprofit sector, eventually moving to Nepal to work as the Executive Director of the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre. In 2012, he went to Thailand to be the CEO of Soi Dog Foundation, the largest stray animal protection organization in Southeast Asia. Gregg left Thailand to become the Executive Director of PASA, the largest association of wildlife centers in Africa, which includes 23 organizations in 13 countries focused on securing a future for Africa’s primates and their habitat. Gregg is collaborating with wildlife centers to rescue and protect apes and monkeys and raise awareness about wildlife conservation.
