Hawai'i's Reefs

Hawai'i's Reefs

Few places on Earth can rival Hawai'i's amazing diversity of life. But Hawai‘i's rare beauty and natural diversity, both on land and in the surrounding waters, are exceptionally fragile.

Hawai'i's once fertile and well-managed reefs and fisheries helped sustain a self-sufficient Hawaiian population for a thousand years. But the pressures of an increasing population and over 7 million visitors a year are straining reefs and fisheries. Impacts from climate change, overfishing, sedimentation, land-based pollution, and invasive species have contributed to a 40% decline in living coral reefs in some areas in the last 40 years, and a more than 75% decline in commercially important reef fish populations over the past century.

Dwayne Minton is a marine biologist for The Nature Conservancy in Hawai'i whose work focuses on identifying problems on reefs, designing studies and helping communities track progress and analyze results.

Minton holds a PhD in zoology and more than two decades of experience in Pacific coral reef ecology. He has planned coral reef mitigation and assessed reef conservation actions, managed lands and waters for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service, advised the United Nations on World Heritage site assessments in Papua New Guinea, and served as a field invertebrate specialist on numerous NOAA Pacific research cruises. He is also an accomplished science fiction author.

The location that serves as one of McMenamins favorite neighborhood theater pubs was the locus of great spiritual zeal beginning in the 1890s. That's when the Swedish Evangelical Mission established its church here....

From a church to a theater-pub, the Mission's history ain't exactly saintly. Click here for more info!
