"In the beginning there was James Beard" Julia Child once said of her good friend James Beard. As "America's First Foodie" he made an impression on chefs and food lovers that still reaches far and wide today. No place made more of an imprint on him than the Oregon Coast and Gearhart, Oregon; from his first trip as a child in 1908 to returning to teach classes in 1980 at the local high school with the likes of Julia Child and Marion Cunningham. He fell in love with the "isolated charm" and said, "No place I have ever been gives me quite as much pleasure--I adore the ocean, the sand and the solitude."

We are pleased to announce a special dinner celebrating the life of James Beard in the place he loved so dearly--Gearhart, Oregon. On August 11 on the Livingston Lawn at McMenamins Gearhart Hotel, guests will be treated to a James Beard-inspired dinner. Using fresh and local ingredients from the immediate area, our collection of McMenamins executive chefs have created a menu that would make James proud. We will pair the menu with his favorite libations, and raise a glass to the Father of American Cuisine.

During dinner, guests will be treated with an exclusive showing of the award-winning documentary, "America's First Foodie," presented by Producer and Director Beth Federici.
