About Zwickelmania

What the heck is a zwickelmania, you ask? It is a free event (now spanning two days!) hosted by the Oregon Brewers Guild in which breweries throughout the state throw open their doors and let the public stream in! Stop by our brewery, where you can try a sample of handcrafted ale, chat with the brewers and have a look around.

During this once-a-year celebration, breweries across the state hold open-house style events that allow craft beer enthusiasts and novices alike the opportunity to get an up-close look at the state's thriving craft beer scene.

Here's a list of where we'll be pouring some special ales:

February 18
Portland - Crystal Brewery
Portland - Kennedy School Concordia Brewery
Hillsboro - Cornelius Pass Roadhouse Brewery

And in honor of Zwickelmania on February 18, get a 64-ounce growler fill of any McMenamins beer at all Portland-Metro area locations for $8 ($10 for high gravity; Brewers Reserve beers do not qualify).

February 25
– Old St. Francis Brewery

On February 25, get a 64-ounce growler fill of any McMenamins beer for $8 ($10 for high gravity; Brewers Reserve beers do not qualify) at our Oregon locations in: McMinnville, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, Lincoln City, Gearhart, Roseburg and Bend.

"There's an excitement about the craft brewing scene here, and Zwickelmania offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate our beer culture by visiting some of the phenomenal breweries that call Oregon home," says Oregon Brewers Guild Executive Director Brian Butenschoen.

From 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., participating locations will offer everything from brewery tours and beer & food pairings to brewer led discussions and beers samples.  Additionally, the Oregon Brewers Guild will provide free shuttle buses in Portland, Eugene and Bend to ferry visitors among multiple breweries.  Admission to Zwickelmania events and the shuttle bus service are both free.

Zwickelmania takes its name from the zwickel sample valve on beer conditioning tanks.  This sample port is an essential tool in the brewing process and allows brewers to take quality control samples during the fermentation process.

Visit the Oregon Brewers Guild website for a complete list of participating breweries and shuttle bus schedules.

Feel Good Country Lager
Named for one of the Crystal Brewers' favorite sub-sub-genres, Feel Good Country Lager is a crisp and light-bodied beer meant to help you make memories at the Crystal Ballroom. Memories like that time you met your future sweetheart working in the cornfields, or the time you took that old truck for its last drive, or listening to your grandpa's stories, or strawberry wine...
Malts: Czech Pilsen, German Pilsen, Bonlander Munich, Carapils
Hops: Nugget, Tettnanger, US Goldings
OG: 1.042 TG: 1.009 ABV: 4.26 IBU: 20 SRM: 3

The Brown Wizard from Highland Brewery
This brew was a collaboration with local psych rockers Máscaras for the McMenamins Sabertooth Micro Fest. Highland Brewer Ryan spoke with drummer Papi about the band's favorite Mexican Lagers (historically derived from traditional Vienna Lagers), and it was decided that a "Mexican Session Ale" would be a fitting complement to the high energy type of show that the band is known for. Amber in color, with a hint of malt sweetness and a gently spicy hop character, this thirst-quencher is named after guitarist Carlos' showtime alter ego. As bassist Theo lays down the foundation, raise a glass and celebrate the confluence of beer and music!
Malts: Best Vienna, Flaked Corn, Caramel Vienna, Midnight Wheat
Hops: Tettnanger
OG: 1.044 TG: 1.005 ABV: 5.03 IBU: 20 SRM: 11

Hard Days Red
Everyone who puts in a full days work deserves a "Hard Days Red". The Grand Lodge property in Forest Grove is opening a new hotel wing and this classic American Red Ale was brewed as a tribute to the hard work put in by all involved in the construction. Dry-hopped with more than a pound per barrel of Falconers Flight blend, "Hard Days Red" offers a perfect balance of premium barley and classic Northwest Hops.
