About SmallTown Strings

SmallTown Strings

SmallTown Strings are a brother and sister duo from Curlew, WA who are accompanied on stage with their dad, Jay Carlile, and occasionally their cousin, Josephine Hanseroth. They are the niece and nephew of multi-Grammy award winner, Brandi Carlile, and have experience playing everything from private shows, festivals, breweries, to being on the main stage with their aunt at multiple venues like Red Rocks, The Gorge, and Wolf Trap. They play Americana, Country, Rock and Bluegrass, performing both covers and original songs, and they will blow your socks off with their charisma and talent!

Caroline Carlile is 16 years old and in addition to the banjo, which she started playing at 9 years old, she also plays the guitar and piano, and writes her own music. Her brother, JayJ Carlile, is 13 years old and plays guitar, bass, mandolin and fiddle. He also collaborates with their songwriting and at 11 years old, with the inspirational advice from Allison Russel who said that "music is a healer," wrote the song "Leftover Sentences," about his personal experience with anxiety. Jay Carlile has been writing music with his family since his youth and accompanies Caroline and JayJ on several of their songs. He will be joining The Judds tour for the second time this coming fall.

SmallTown Strings began their first nationwide "Ramblin' Tour" this June, starting on a side stage at their aunt's Brandi Carlile's Mothership Weekend festival in Florida. The next stop they played in front of 2,000 fans at Cave B Winery, during the Echos In The Canyon/Joni Jam weekend at The Gorge. From there they traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to play at The Musician's Corner, and then on to North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and back to their hometown of Curlew, Washington, where they recently co-hosted the third annual Kettle River Music Festival. They are currently en route to Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Colorado. The last leg of their tour starts at the end of September at Easy Street Records in Seattle, Washington, then down to Oregon and through California, including a show at The Hotel Café in Los Angeles, ending with shows at the famous McMenamins venues at the end of November and beginning of December.
