As part of the Crystal Ballroom Free-For-All

“A Look Back at Portland in the 1960s”

2 p.m.

All ages welcome

This is part of the Crystal Ballroom Free-For-All event.

“A Look Back at Portland in the 1960s”

“A Look Back at Portland in the 1960s”

Presented by Polina Olsen, followed by musical performances by Peter Langston (formerly of the Portland Zoo) and Fred Lackaff (a founding member of the Tweedy Brothers)

In 1968, Newsweek reported an imminent threat of 20,000 hippies descending on Portland, OR. Although the numbers were exaggerated, Portland did boast a vibrant 1960s culture of disenchanted and disenfranchised individuals seeking social and political revolution. Barefoot and bellbottomed, they hung out in Portlands bohemian underground and devised a better world. What began in coffee shop conversations found its voice in the Willamette Bridge newspaper, KBOO radio station and the Portland State University student strike, resulting in social, artistic and political change in the Rose City. Come hear author Polina Olsen and musicians Peter Langston and Fred Lackaff bring back the era of the Caffe Espresso, the Psychedelic Supermarket and the concerts and communal soups of Lair Hill Park.

About the Speaker
Polina Olsen is the author of “Portland in the 1960s: Stories from the Counterculture,” and several other books on local history. A former software engineer, she now spends her time freelance writing and teaching citizenship and ESOL classes.

About the Performers
Peter Langston joined the Portland Zoo while still a student at Reed College. He taught audio recording and computer science at The Evergreen State College and is on the staff of several music and dance camps.

Fred Lackaff grew up outside Vancouver, WA, and was a founding member of the popular 1960s band, The Tweedy Brothers.
