Magic City Hippies

Shades on and shirts unbuttoned, Magic City Hippies generate the kind of heat that could've powered a high seas yacht party in the seventies or shake a Coachella stage next summer. If the trio-Robby Hunter, Pat Howard, and John Coughlin-stepped off the screen from some long-lost Quentin Tarantino flick in slow-motion (instruments in hand), nobody would question it. Embracing everything from AM radio rock and poolside pop to nimble raps and salsa, they lock into an era-less vibe with no shortage of psychedelic funk or hooks. The three-piece deliver the kind of bangers you can play on the way to the party, during the party, and to smooth over the comedown as the sun comes up.

As the guys so eloquently describe it, they "give people a choice to enjoy this on the surface level, feel funky in their bodies, and dance...or go deeper into the music."

As legend has it, the origin of Magic City Hippies can be traced back to Robby's days of permit-less busking in Miami. Eventually, Pat and John proved to be better accompaniment than his loop pedal, so the trio played regular bar gigs and built an audience locally. They formed as Robby Hunter Band, released the Magic City Hippies album, and adopted the title as their name. That LP gained traction in 2013 with syncs on The CW's iZombie and Showtime's Ray Donovan. On its heels, 2015's Hippie Castle EP catalyzed their breakout as "Limestone" piled up over 21 million Spotify streams followed by "Fanfare" with another 20 million Spotify streams. They toured endlessly and moved crowds at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Hulaween, Okeechobee Fest, Electric Forest, and Austin City Limits, to name a few. Along the way, the band also picked up acclaim from Relix and OnesToWatch as they dropped the fan favorite Modern Animal in 2019. When the world shutdown, the boys settled in different parts of the country (Rob "doing his Johny Mayer thing" in Bozeman, MT, Pat in Los Angeles, CA, and John still in Miami). Remotely, they wrote what would become their third full-length album, Water Your Garden, out January 2022. As things opened back up, the musicians put it all together in person.

Armed with singles such as "Queen," the falsetto-spiked "High Beams" [feat. Nafets], "Diamond," and "Ghost On The Mend" Magic City Hippies are ready to heat up their next chapter now.

CAPYAC is a surrealist dance band with as much Berlin/Detroit/French electronic influences as jazz, funk and the swirl of modern genres mixed in. Started in Austin, TX with a consortium of collaborators, the founding duo is now based between Los Angeles, CA and Berlin, Germany regularly featuring guest vocalists, horn sections, dance troupes, and fish mongers to elate and enlighten.

Their debut single "Speedracer" set the stage for an avant-garde aesthetic alongside chill Rhodes piano, slowed nudisco beats and funky guitars. With "Headlunge", "Fis", "Who is Donny Flamingo?" and "Baby Make Money" multi track releases, we saw the musical partners P. Sugz and Potion dabbling in minimal techno, spy-movie theme songs, trap jazz and every genre amidst the kicks and snares. With regular contributions from saxophonist Papa Mongoose, MCs Rudi Devino & Slim Jeff, vocalists, nay jesters Oolaf, Ciceley Fullylove & LeggyBean and percussionist/daredevil Zach "Showtime" Yanez, their live shows are infamously full of antics you'll only see at a CAPYAC show -be it freshly griddled pancakes tossed from the ACL Fest stage, wild musical and theatrical improvisations at Capitol Hill Block Party, Gem & Jam, Wonderfront Fest and Tour de Fat or puppeteering across California's finest stages.

Appearing alongside Big Gigantic, Washed Out, Holy Ghost, Tennyson and more; since 2016 they have performed 400+ shows across the US, MX and throughout Europe to much acclaim and confused smiles. After our collective 2020 pause, the band has continued to revive dancefloors with several remixes, collaborations, their second debut album "CAPYAC FOREVER" and the latest fan-favorite single "GOODTIME'' with its infectious indie alternative chant and French touch / nudisco pulse. Now bringing that energy nationwide, they are embarking on a full US tour supporting Magic City Hippies in early 2023.

Covered by** SPIN, FADER, Wonderland, This Song Is Sick, EARMILK, High Snobiety, KCRW, Magnetic Magazine** and more, their music spans genres while appealing to purists and everyday listeners alike. Modern music declassifiers, CAPYAC are steadily releasing new singles as we watch them real-time stretch and explore the far reaches of (most simply put) "electronic dance music" but more aptly described as "good music to dance to."

* Security cost is an estimate. Additional security may be required depending on the nature of the event. 

Overtime: All expenses incurred by the Crystal Ballroom for Catering, Advertising, requested stagehands, overtime (anything over 10 hours), backline, barricade, risers, etc. will be added to total rental rate.

Deposits: A non-refundable 50% room deposit and a $2,500 'untenured promoter fee' (UPF) is due immediately in order to secure the room. If ticket sales exceed 500 the 'UPF' will be refunded; if ticket sales are below 500 the room keeps the entire $2,500 to make up for less than 1/3 capacity and corresponding lack of sales. The 'UPF' will not be refunded if the event cancels within 60 days of the event.

Settlement: Venue will pay renter with a company check at the immediate conclusion of door sales. Venue will not provide any cash at settlement.

Late Night Fee: There is a $1,000/hour additional fee for any events after 3 a.m. We may also require additional security for events of that nature.

Merchandise: Merch rate is 20% they sell. We can provide a seller with advance notice and will keep 30% of sales. The outside promoter will receive no revenue from the merchandise as that is the prerogative of the house. House keeps a percentage of all transactions.

Tickets: All tickets must be placed through the venue onto the Cascade Tickets system. All comps, label buys, and holds must be approved by the venue. There is a $2/ticket venue fee at the Box Office.

Refunds: All refunds will be directed to the outside promoter. In the absence of an outside promoter representative, the venue shall use its own discretion regarding refunds and all refunds shall be deducted from settlement.

Insurance and Licenses: Renter must provide liability insurance not less than $1,000,000 for any single occurrence naming McMenamins Inc. d.b.a. Crystal Ballroom as additionally insured. Tickets will not be placed on sale until binder is received. Promoter is responsible for all ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC fees.

Production Advance: Performers or their representative must contact venue's production manager 5 days prior to the event in order to advance production needs, otherwise runner will arrive at 6 p.m. and all rider items/requests will be greatly limited if provided at all.

Layout: The Crystal Ballroom is located on the 3rd floor. The first floor is Ringlers Restaurant and the 2nd floor is Lola's Room, both of which may have a public or private event simultaneously with the Crystal.

Cancellation/Postponement: The contract covers the specified event for the specified date. No substitution will be accepted for a cancellation. If the event is postponed the room deposit will be transferred to the date of the new event but the $2,500 'UPF' will be applied toward the date of the originally scheduled show and an additional $2,500 will be required in order to reschedule.

Capacity: The venue's capacity is 1500*. All artist and promoter guests and comps will be deducted from sellable. Comp and guest space must be reserved in advance. House is entitled to 20 guests. House guests will not effect sellable. Promoter must have guest list to house no later than 2 hours prior to doors. VIP cap is 25.

* Seated capacity is 850. Seated shows must be 21 and over. There is a $2/chair rental fee.

Venue and corporate sponsor banners may be present during event.

Please note! Both the Crystal Ballroom and Lola's Room specialize in open-floor shows with a very limited amount of seats. The rare seated events will be clearly denoted as such, within the event description on our schedule page.

Box Office Information

Tickets for all McMenamins shows are ticketed by Cascade Tickets, and may be purchased at the Crystal box office (located under the Crystal's awning) and McMenamins Edgefield, by phone at 1-855-CAS-TIXX, or by clicking the "Buy Tickets" link located at the event listing on our schedules.

Tickets bought directly at the Crystal box office or any of our four ticket outlets will only incur a $1 facility charge. (Please note! Tickets to Edgefield Concerts on the Lawn will incur additional service fees.)

Tucked in the Crystal’s second story is Lola’s Room accommodating events of up to 200 guests.  Lola’s comes with a handsome fully stocked bar, original artwork, and a floating dance floor all it’s own.
