The Residue Years: The Documentary chronicles Mitchell S. Jackson's journey from the son of an addicted parent and later drug dealer and convict to award-winning critically acclaimed author and professor. It explores Portland, Oregon's gang life, drug culture, and the city's most famous hope: basketball.

The film also details Jackson's journey through the New York publishing world. The film features cultural icon Tavis Smiley, drug legend Freeway Rick Ross, award-winning author John Edgar Wideman, and notable book publisher George Gibson.
