About “Conflict at the Cascades: Lewis & Clark in the Columbia River Gorge”

Columbia River Long NarrowsOn their outward-bound trip in 1805 and their return in 1806, Lewis & Clark and their expeditionary force had trouble negotiating their passage through the Cascades and Long Narrows of the Columbia River Gorge. Their decisions in the Gorge affected the Expedition’s experience in surprising and important ways.

William L. Lang, Ph.D., is emeritus professor of history at Portland State University, the founding director of the Center for Columbia River History, and founding editor of Oregon Encyclopedia. He is the author and editor of many books and articles on the Columbia River and the Pacific Northwest, including Great River of the West: Essays on the Columbia River.
