This month:
Pumpkinheads rejoice! For the March Meet The Brewer/special beer release Old Church brewer Mark Goodwin is going to do a side by side comparison featuring the Three Rocks rum barrel-aged Pumpkin Ale (barrel conditioned two months) coupled with a non rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale (cellared for four months). Side by side, you make the call on whether it is a good idea to take the wood to an orange gourd…
Lord of the Wood Pumpkin ImperiAle -
This brew was aged for three months in a fresh ‘Edgefield Three Rocks’ rum barrel and then cellared for another two months. Hand chopped organic pumpkins were roasted and mashed into the grain during brewing as well as in the kettle. Clear orange with an off-white lacey head and strong rum spice nose, you will hardly notice the high alcohol content as you imbibe these festive brews. Over 8 pounds of pumpkin per keg provide the color and meatiness while carefully chosen spices provide the seasonal backbone of the beer.
Malts: German Pilsner, Caramunich 40L, Flaked Barley
Hops: Golding and Brewers Gold
Yeast: German Kolsch
Adjuncts: 100 pounds of fresh Oregon organic pumpkin from Lauer Boer Goat Farm, Fresh Ginger, Clove, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Vanilla and Oak chips
OG: 1.075 TG: 1.010 ABV: 9.5 IBU: 15 SRM: 6
Lord Gourd Pumpkin ImperiAle -
Cellar-aged four months this is the exact same beer as above minus the two months of Three Rocks Rum barrel aging.
