About St. Johns Theater & Pub

Built in 1905 as the National Cash Register Company's exhibit hall for Portland's Lewis and Clark Exposition, this spectacular building was barged down the Willamette River after the expo to its current location, where subsequent incarnations included a Lutheran church, an American Legion post, a bingo parlor and a home for Gypsy wakes.

The ever-evolving domed structure was later reinvented as Duffy's Irish Pub and finally, St. Johns Theater & Pub. And here we are! Friends and families are welcome today to enjoy a casual meal, either indoors or out.

Faithfully continuing in its role as neighborhood pub and gathering spot, our theater features first-run film releases for a reasonable price of $7 matinee for adults and kids, and $9 adults and $7 kids, seniors and military for showings after 5 pm Enjoy McMenamins handcrafted ales, wines, ciders, spirits and full food menu during the movie.

St. Johns Pub allows pets at our patio seating only.

How to Train Your Dragon 2025

(PG) Running time: 125 minutes

From three-time Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, comes a stunning live-action reimagining of the film that launched the beloved franchise. On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader. The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).

History

Back in 1905, the St. John's Theater & Pub building was a veritable palace, compact, but nevertheless impressive, with its cupola, pillared portico, colorful flags, and tall, goddess-like statue. It stood just inside the main gate of the Lewis and Clark Exposition, the World's Fair that drew more than two million visitors to Northwest Portland....

ADA

Accessibility
Though we make every effort to accommodate our guests with mobility disability needs, St. Johns Theater & Pub is a historical building, which comes with unique accessibility issues.

The patio entrance, located on Ivanhoe Street, is equipped with an ADA compliant ramp. For theater guests, we have a moveable ramp that we can install over the theater stairs to accommodate guests using wheelchairs, scooters or mobility devices. There is one wheelchair accessible space in the theater, and accommodations can be made if more spaces are required. Unfortunately, our bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible at this time. We are working on remedies and hope to provide better accommodations in the future.

If you have any questions about accessibility at St. Johns, don’t hesitate to contact us.
