February is for lovers. So for lovers of good beer, whiskey and delicious food, we are doing something special. Along with our usual monthly limited-edition beer tasting, we are opening up the Distillery doors and offering tastings of both our special-release beer (The Widowmaker) and Edgefield Distillery's award-winning Hogshead Whiskey, as well as serving complimentary food pairing for this event (while supplies last). The Edgefield brewers and distillers will be on hand to answer your questions. Don't forget your growlers to take home this rare ale!
Plus: Every pint of Widowmaker comes with a raffle ticket — it's your chance to win a limited-edition Black Widow t-shirt! Other Black Widow merchandise will be for sale in the gift shop in the hotel lobby.
Shortly after Halloween, we filled a freshly emptied Hogshead Whiskey barrel from our own Edgefield Distillery with a limited-release Black Widow Porter. For a month, the complex flavors of this wicked ale mingled with the whiskey barrel, resulting in a beer that marries the two — it is sublimely full-flavored with plenty of whiskey aroma and flavor, coupled with hints of vanilla and oak. In spite of its strength, The Widowmaker is surprisingly smooth and approachable.
About the original Black Widow: Our special Halloween Ale, Black Widow Porter was made for the first time 20 years ago at McMenamins Thompson Brewery (Salem, Ore.) and produced there annually ever since. Black Widow is dark and roasted with subliminal notes of anise and chocolate in the finish, mostly due to the licorice root added at the end of the kettle boil.
About Hogshead Whiskey: Hogshead is an original. Continuing the independent and innovative styles of Northwest brewers and vintners, this whiskey is distilled with only a passing nod to the great Scotch, Irish and Bourbon distillers, before striking off on its own. Boasting a palate-pleasing combination of malty spirit, reminiscent of the malted barley grain that began the process, and the smoky, vanilla sweet-wood that surrounds the spirit until bottling, Hogshead is a rich, amber-hued whiskey.
