About The Black Pirate vs. The Flying Dutchman
Come and enjoy the launch of Opera Theater Oregon's thrilling new series "Opera vs. Cinema," where we pair forgotten silent films with live improvised accompaniment from your favorite operas!
Enjoy an evening of raunchy sea shanties sung by the OTO gang, a
pirate costume contest that will have you walking the plank, and pirate
themed drink specials such as the Johnny Depp and Extra Special Booty.
Then once you are filled with rum and ale and your head is swimming with
19th century vulgarity take a seat and enjoy the classic silent film
"The Black Pirate" (way before Jack Sparrow and the many CG enhanced
ghouls of "Pirates of the Caribbean") in Technicolor with live
improvised accompaniment by renowned pianist Douglas Schneider.
Doug
will be improvising from Richard Wagner's broody opera "Der fliegende
Holländer" (The Flying Dutchman) and weaving in motifs like the ebb and
flow of the tide.
Stay tuned for Metropolis vs. Aida in February!
