About PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater
PDX Jazz, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural arts organization founded in 2003 in partnership with Travel Portland, produces the annual Portland Jazz Festival. The organization’s mission is to inspire, educate and develop future jazz audiences for generations to come. The Portland Jazz Festival is a multi-venue series of jazz events presented each February within Portland, Oregon. Nationally and regionally supported as a cultural tourism initiative in celebration of Black History Month, Portland Jazz Festival is dedicated to preserving America’s indigenous art form by presenting internationally recognized jazz masters alongside local jazz musicians. A series of jazz education and outreach programs that extend into Portland’s schools and neighborhoods is at the heart of the annual event.
About Omar Sosa Afri-Lectric Experience: A Tribute To Miles Davis Kind of Blue
"Sosa is a deeply creative musician with an extraordinary harmonic sense. His piano playing is sui generis: it has obvious roots in Cuban music, but he's taken his approach to the keyboard into completely new regions." - John Adams, Composer
The Afri-Lectric Experience began as a commission for the 2009 Barcelona Jazz Festival, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis' seminal work Kind of Blue. Inspired by various musical elements and motifs, Sosa wrote a suite of music honoring the spirit of freedom in Davis' influential music.
Omar Sosa: piano, fender rhodes, MOTIF ES8, electronics, vocals; Marque Gilmore: drums, electronics, vocals; Childo Tomas: electric bass, m'bira, vocals;
