About Chris Phillips
Chris Phillips is a 23-year-old keyboardist that is helping shape the pathway for young minds to express themselves through experimental music. Growing up in the Chicago area made it easy to seek out strong musical influences.
Though the inspiration was there Chris was not introduced to a piano until the age of sixteen when he was completing his independent study through his high school. Heavily influenced early on by rock and roll, jam bands and funk music it seemed only right to bring those influences into his original music. After being exposed to the Fender Rhodes, Hohner D6 Clavinet and Hammond Organ Chris felt the need to develop his own sound and writing style.
After high school Chris moved to Southern Illinois to continue his education and musical aspirations playing in clubs throughout the Midwest. While in Southern Illinois Phillips studied with Mel Goot and Nick Kuypers who provided major musical inspiration and friendship.
The feeling for change came the summer of 2006 when Chris decided to head west to Portland Oregon. Currently Chris attends Portland State University studying Geology with a minor in Jazz Studies. Right now Phillips is working with some great groups such as D3, The Manimals and The Michael Quinn Project. D3 is planning on releasing their debut CD comprised mostly of Chris's originals by winter of 2008.
