About Scott Law
Guitarist and singer-songwriter, Scott Law embodies the ideal of the Steel-String Master. Fluent in both acoustic and electric genres, he is a brilliant and versatile instrumentalist, lauded and cherished by fellow musicians and crowds alike for his ability to raise the energy level and musicality of his collaborations. Scott's alternately chiming and grinding melodic concept bears favorable comparison to the greatest innovators of American Guitar, merging these roots into a fresh and identifiable sound that is his own. Scott’s songwriting, vocal phrasing, rhythmic integrity and story-like solos all roll with the crosscurrents at the confluence of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass and Country music.
A fearless improviser and captain of tone, Scott plays beautifully-wild and impulsive electric guitar with his own SCOTT LAW REUNION BAND, Telecaster lead with old school California-based country aces BROKEDOWN IN BAKERSFIELD and blazing flat-pick style acoustic with Darol Anger's REPUBLIC OF STRINGS. Scott also performs with a more traditional Bluegrass band, GREEN STATE and as a SOLO, laying down earthy, danceable grooves using fingerpicks, slide techniques and open tunings.
Appearing frequently with other artists, Scott has performed onstage as featured guest with a number of musical giants including Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), The String Cheese Incident, The Travelin' McCourys (Del McCoury), Danny Barnes, Crooked Still, Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, Melvin Seals, Tony Furtado and many others…
Scott is currently working on two new studio releases for 2012, one electric guitar-based, and one acoustic. His most recent solo album, "Living Room" came out in February 2009 on his own label, Volcano Underground. In 2006, SCI-Fidelity released a recording of Scott with String Cheese Incident guitarist Bill Nershi and his partner, Jilian eponymously titled "HONKYTONK HOMESLICE." Law was also a member of the award-winning Seattle acoustic-world-music group, HANUMAN whose 1999 recording, "PEDALHORSE" independently sold over 10,000 copies.
Law has scored and performed music for film and television, including an original song for the CBS primetime feature "Viva Laughlin" in 2007 and soundtracks for 2 full-length documentaries by The Columbia Land Trust and Tom's Of Maine. He is a dedicated and experienced music educator, teaching at various workshops, schools, camps, festivals and private sessions throughout the year.
As a kid, if not playing baseball, Scott was listening to music; Country, Blues, Rock and Jazz poured constantly forth from his father's 1960’s vintage, all tube-driven HiFi and vast LP collection. The Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Pete Seeger, Merle Haggard, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Johnny Cash, Wes Montgomery and many others were his musical foundation. Always in tune with the rhythm, Scott’s first consistent musical pursuit was drums, playing along with cassette tapes and joining stage band in 8th grade. At age 15 he switched to guitar and never looked back.
