Rose City Revelations
Since Portland celebrates the
annual Rose Festival every June, it’s the perfect time to join Rocky Smith as
he explores the history of how Stumptown came to be known as the Rose City.
Rocky will convey the struggles of pioneers who brought rose bushes across the
Oregon Trail to plant in Oregon Territory as a symbol of hope and new
beginning. From the inauguration site of the First Governor of the Territory to
the Father of Oregon’s gift to a little girl stricken with typhoid, roses have
been the huge part of the traditions and folklore of our region. Rocky will
weave the threads that lead to the creation of the Rose Festival and discuss
those who were responsible for its founding. Guests will also hear some amazing
ghost stories and legends associated with Oregon’s two most famous haunted
mansions and hear stories of spirits from Portland’s past, some who were laid
to rest at Lone Fir Cemetery.
