Chez Stadium
Eclectic, lyrical indie pop
As Chez Stadium, Randall Payton performs and records both solo and with an evolving cast of Portland, Ore., musicians. Shuffling his genre-fluid catalog, listeners will discover songs that range from winsome Westerbergian ballads to dark Dylanic meanderings, from caustic Costellovian canticles to Pollardesque pummelings.
Payton formed "the band" in 1999 with bassist Pete Lampe. He and his various collaborators have shared the stage with Clem Snide, Centro-matic, Motorgoat (Quasi), Hazel, The Long Winters, David Dondero, actor/director John Cameron Mitchell and others. The current band includes Mark Wills, drums; Grant Cumpston, guitar; and Lampe on bass.
In 2003, Payton produced Chez Stadium's debut CD, Freshman Slump, with 44 Long's Brian Berg engineering. The digital-only release Further Ado followed in 2015. In 2016, Don't Blink Twice fulfilled a challenge to write/record/release a complete album within the month of November of that year.
