35th Anniversary of the Brewpub Law
July 13 marks the 35th anniversary of Oregon's Brewpub Bill, signed into law at the urging of brewing pioneers Mike & Brian McMenamin, Kurt and Rob Widmer, Art Larrance and Fred Bowman (Portland Brewing), and Dick and Nancy Ponzi (Bridgeport Brewing). This group of beer loving entrepreneurs persuaded Representative Tom Mason to sponsor a bill that would allow beer to be brewed and served within the same establishment. The effort failed to pass Oregon's Senate earlier in the year, but after tacking it onto a new bill, it was signed into law by Governor Vic Atiyeh on July 13, 1985 and changed history forever - for the better, as far as we're concerned.
Tune in to McMenamins Facebook for a livestream on July 13 at 2 pm for an interview with Brian McMenamin about the fateful bill. Then join us in raising a glass of your favorite ale to 35 years - and to drinking it just steps away from where it was made.
