Yak Attack

Electronic Power Trio

Yak Attack

Live electronic power trio Yak Attack (Portland, OR) is on the rise thanks to exuberant performances across the country that convert the most casual fans into followers. Their live show is musically sophisticated but widely accessible, and they're supported by a growing army of engaged fans willing to make long drives for their next musical fix. Best described as "organic electronica", Yak Attack uses live loops, tight chops, and raw improvisation to build high-energy dance music that's rooted in breakbeat, electro-funk and trip-hop from scratch, where every uplifting note is played and recorded live.

Yak Attack was founded when Dave Dernovsek (keys), a Colorado/New York transplant with a competitive classical piano background, met Rowan Cobb (bass), who was building a name for himself in the Portland live music scene as a founding member of numerous successful touring bands. The two shared an interest in creating a livetronica project - Dave had been experimenting with various loop-based setups for years, and Rowan's prior electronic band, Alpaca!, had just broken up. The two met Nick Werth (drums) at one of the group's early shows. Nick had quickly built his musical reputation from his stellar abilities at the drum set, as well as his family connection to the band Snarky Puppy (his brother Nate plays percussion in that group, and Nick currently plays in Ghost Note, featuring Nate and Sput among other Snarky members). Initially a fan of the band, Nick was touring full time with local legend Scott Pemberton's band, but found time to guest on percussion and xylosynth at various Yak Attack shows, laying down some tracks on the band's first album, Real World Conditions, which was released in 2015. With the departure of the group's original drummer in early 2016, Rowan and Dave asked Nick to take the drum set full time, and the current Yak Attack lineup was born.

Yak Attack's 2018 album 'Safety Third' was released via Philadelphia's storied label, Ropeadope Records, founded by John Medeski.  It embodies what they have become known for - a continuous DJ-style dance party played with all real instruments. Each track flows seamlessly into the next, and the mix of electro-funk, pop, and house is augmented by a world-class roster of guest musicians. The result is the band's warmest and fullest-sounding record yet, with horns, strings, and winds complimenting our signature pulsing synth-driven grooves. From the gritty opening riff of "Pump and Dump" to the infectious synth-pop vocals on "Hear the Sound", to the full Yakestra wall of sound on "Eighth Wonder", Safety Third is crafted to be an album you'll want to listen to over and over again.

The band has performed at festivals like Treefort Fest, Joshua Tree Music Festival, WaveSpell, Summer Meltdown and Northwest String Summit, while also establishing itself as leaders of the after party following acts like Phish. They have shared the stage with STS9, Snarky Puppy, Fruition, Lotus, Sunsquabi, TAUK, Turkuaz as well as members of String Cheese Incident & Thievery Corporation, among many others.

High Pulp

High Pulp Born out of a basement in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood in 2015, High Pulp has been taking Seattle by storm. Obsessive attention to compositional detail and unique song structures characterize the band’s winding music. Effortlessly fusing diverse influences from jazz to funk and hip-hop to punk has lead High Pulp to call it’s music Future Funk Fusion - a melding of the past to create something distinctly cutting edge. In March of 2017, High Pulp began playing weekly shows at Seattle’s revered jazz club The Royal Room, facilitating the development of deeply engaged in-the-moment conversations between members. As the band grew its ability to express and improvise in the live setting, the buzz grew stronger. Since High Pulp initially broke onto the scene, the band has already played to packed rooms at some of Seattle’s most prominent venues such as Neumos, The Tractor, and The Crocodile, as well as playing festivals such as Upstream, BAMF, and Big Bldg Bash. In January of 2018, the band entered the ’studio’ (a friend’s cabin on Whidbey Island) with Jason Gray (Polyrhythmics) to record their debut album ‘Bad Juice’. Featuring 8 songs, ‘Bad Juice’ is High Pulp’s manifesto - taking the listener on a series of unexpected turns and all the while inducing subconscious head-bobbing. At its core, this is a band of adversaries - the moment that High Pulp seems to fit into a ‘genre’, it will be immediately shattered. "Seattle’s fusion big band High Pulp’s debut... answers the new millennium’s post-trip-hop, -indie, -ambient, -drum & bass, etc. contemporary with vinyl sharp grooves, macramé arrangements, and session-level instrumentation" - Earshot Jazz

All Star Opera

All Star Opera Based out of SEATTLE, All Star Opera at surface level is a Hip-Hop/Soul band. Listen a little closer and one will find a collective of artists balancing a diversity of talents and influences. Two emcees, Flow Carter and Oz + a four-piece band play back and forth creating a vivid sound migrating between genres with both attitude and grace. This is Hip-Hop. This is Soul. This is a collective experience being channeled by a band of brothers in groove. This is a full moon in the middle of the day. Or as the six-fingered beast says, this is All Star Opera. Carla Bell wrote in June 2018 for the Tacoma News-Tribune: “Take Miles Davis and hope, Anthony Kiedis and a journey, Kahlua and cream and confidence, your best Nicaraguan cigar and slippers, a cozy, dimly lit corner booth, a soft rain Sunday afternoon and Weezer, a little heated massage oil and Black Thought and those hanging, beaded room dividers. Now, pour that in your ear. With a sound just that distinct yet familiar but also fresh, All Star Opera is like a new old friend.” She’s not wrong. All Star Opera is the nexus where groovy, meets a rock star hustle; for the last two years the six-fingered beast has been tearing through the Pacific Northwest music scene. Since dropping their debut EP (2016) + LP (2017), the band has played 50+ shows all over the western United States, unleashing the magic at clubs, parties and many notable music festivals. To top it off, All Star Opera was voted Seattle Weekly’s ‘Best Band in Seattle’ 2017. With ASO the goals are simple, make great music and have fun while doing it.
