David Barber

Jazz musician & rapper

David Barber

David Barber is an MC, a jazz musician and a conduit of avant-garde hip-hop. His live performance consists of compelling verses saturated in abstract imagery as well as unique and spontaneous lyrical delivery. His song arrangements, backed by live musicians, are consistently rooted in the grooves of boom bap hip-hop and jazz. In addition to thoughtfully arranged material, David’s live performance is heavily laced with improvisation, whether it be freestyled verses or instrumental solos. David draws inspiration from MCs such as Common, Busta Rhymes and Mos Def, alongside the influence of jazz musicians such as Ornette Coleman and Charles Mingus.

JP3

Funky, complex jazz

JP3

Portland native James Powers is an accomplished composer known for his often funky, complex, yet approachable modern jazz tunes and his large vocabulary on the trombone. He is currently a member of local modern jazz powerhouses Cloud Six and the Frank Irwin Quintet, as well as Buddy Jay's Jamaican Jazz Band. James is also a member of Portland funk staple March Fourth, regularly touring nationally. His new instrumental trio JP-3 plays an electrifying brand of highly improvisational, groove music, which owes as much to jazz, blues and hip-hop as it does modern classical music and Bulgarian folk song.
