W. A. King

W. A. King was born in Redwood City, California and hails primarily from Marin County. She started playing guitar at age 12, taking two lessons at a local community center before becoming bored and writing songs instead. At age 16, she discovered she could sing, and began writing lyrics. Her main early musical influences were The Who, Blue Oyster Cult, The Moody Blues, Yes, Neil Young and The Doors, while the literary consisted of the likes of Journey To Ixtlan, The Tao of Physics and The Kin of Ata Are Waiting For You.

Her love of the outdoors pervading her lyrics, she uses natural imagery to convey insight into human nature through direct experience and dreams. As a child, she struggled to connect with others, attempting to do so at a higher level of awareness than the consensus reality that most are so heavily invested in. If you really listen, you will hear her ever questioning this choice, and asking you to participate.

In the late nineties, King fronted an Outlaw-Country band specializing in Patsy Cline. Then a stranger gave King a cassette of Avalon Sunset by Van Morrison, leading to a month-long period of listening to nothing but Van's deeper tracks. She later found a cassette of Din Of Ecstasy by Chris Whitley, leading to an enduring passion for the man and his music. In 1997, she discovered a dream brother in Jeff Buckley by reading his obituary in Mojo magazine. Her goal is to achieve the self-mastery and independence of Joni Mitchell, while connecting to her audience as Spirit.
