Mexican Gunfight

Seasoned & soulful songcraft

Mexican Gunfight

Mexican Gunfight is a rock band with a big and easy notion of what "rock" can do. Stylistic influences abound: blues grit, country lyricism, the soulfulness of gospel, a jam thrown in ... even tinges of Latin and jazz dot their sonic landscape. But the Gunfight doesn't lay claim to being a blues, country or gospel act ... they're really just a rock band.

The band's instinctive ability to play seamlessly together is perhaps one of the first things to impress, and betrays the band's experience: Mexican Gunfight's personnel have wandered the U.S. tour routes together for nearly a quarter century, in a half-dozen different outfits, thousands of shows and in hundreds of venues (not to mention a variety of interesting vehicles). Perhaps most notably, their incarnation as The Renegade Saints got regional acclaim and national attention back in the early '90s, but even then they were too rockin' to be a jam band, and definitely too free-form to be grunge.

Since that time the members of Mexican Gunfight -- individually and collectively -- have been notable fixtures in the NW music scene; there's a high probability that you have seen at least one of them playing at a bar, club, theater or festival over the last several years.

The Gunfight pays homage to acts as diverse as Neil Young, Hothouse Flowers, Willie Nelson, Santana, Glen Campbell and Little Feat while offering just as much stylistic variety in its originals. They borrow songs from their "ancestral" incarnations, including the Saints but also Kerosene Dream, The Strangers, Dixon, Tremor Guild and Nine Days Wonder. (Bassist Dave Coey -- a prolific songster in all of his bands since the '80s -- has recently popped out a few new tunes that the band quickly worked over live a few times and brought into the studio.)

The spirit behind Mexican Gunfight's music is - simply put - to consider everything fair game and have a blast rocking it up.

Dave Coey, bass and vocals
Ned Failing, drums and vocals
Mike Walker, piano and organ

Ben Larsen

singer/songwriter

Ben Larsen

Ben Larsen has been a fixture on the Portland music scene for nearly a decade.. Raised in New England (where his first instrument in grade three was the clarinet) and Jakarta, Indonesia, he moved to Portland in 2006 to attend Lewis and Clark College to study jazz guitar, Larsen's musical journey has not been a direct one. After two years studying jazz, he shifted his focus to the mandolin, concentrating on Bach violin sonatas and the choro music of Brazil's early 20th century. After graduating in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in mandolin performance, Larsen began to embed himself in the local folk and bluegrass scene.

Along with a three year stint in Renegade Stringband, developing the Giraffe Dodgers from the ground up, serving as Twisted Whistles' fiddler and mandolin player for a year, Larsen has sat in countless times with Fruition, Left Coast Country, Kory Quinn, the Grant Farm, Allie Kral and Friends, the Wild Wood, the Fire Weeds and several other area folk musicians and bands of all genres. Larsen is currently focusing on a new, well-received band, Crow and the Canyon as well as his solo career. He is available for lessons on guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

Bob Shoemaker

Delta blues

Bob Shoemaker

Bob Shoemaker's music is at once classic and contemporary. Raised on a steady diet of Leadbelly, Son House, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Bob cultivated the touch of a blues master at an early age on his 1936 National Steel Guitar. Honed for decades busking the streets of Seattle, Portland and his native Boston, he sharpened his command of the delta blues into a style that has caught the discerning ears of such artisits as Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal.

Upon meeting blues legend Willie Dixon, Bob received Dixon's personal endorsement to play his songs when Willie said: "The more you do it, the more I like it."

Combining his virtuosic slide and finger-picking technique with powerful and moving vocals, Bob delivers the essence of the blues night after night in the favoured West Coast venues of this classic American artfrom.

Gypsy Heart Tribal

Belly dancing & world music

Gypsy Heart Tribal

A mass of swaying hips, undulating bellies, hands upon hands upon hands with arms moving snake-like, strangely synchronous; watch closely as these powerfully sensuous women wrap you in their web of enchanting improvisation. Haunting horns calling you from the desert, earthly drums bring you back to the beginning of time; forlorn melodies sung from the deepest of souls, Gypsy Heart Tribal invites you to join them on a journey back to the cradle of civilization. Woolen yarns, billowing silk, and jangling metal add texture to delight the senses, reminding you of the millions of women who came before us. A tribute to the past, created in the present, borrowing from many cultures and full of today's urban spirit, feel your tribal soul coming to life, echoing our cries for life and freedom.

“You should know this – Gypsy Heart Tribal rocks. Not rocks like rocks, but rocks like they are so super groovy if you don't go see them at least once in your life you're a clueless schmuck. This group of tribal bellydancers and musicians lulls you first with the experience, and then soon enough you forget you're in Portland and you have a headache and your car is leaking gas and you are so entranced by their performance that later you'd swear you were hypnotized. And maybe you were.” — Willamette Week

McCarl has worked as a professional musician wearing many hats since age 18.  Starting her career at the top, of a mountain that is...Timberline Lodge...she sang with a jazz group for many years and also formed many "folk groups" throughout the years.  Her mentor, Mr. Richard Kohnstamm produced an album called simply "Julie" and it was sold at Timberline.  She has self-produced other albums..."Sweet Dreams and Lullabies".. and co-produced with Pat Schweibert a project called "Momma".  She wrote several of the songs on that album.

She had the wonderful opportunity to go to Japan and sing there for 3 months in Toyonaka, outside Osaka and then to travel to Okinawa for a two month stint at the Manza Beach Resort with her daughter Shannon, who joined her in singing and experiencing the culture!

She has taught music lessons....and studied music....the whole time, feeling that music is definitely a gift to be shared in as many ways as possible....the world seems to need more harmony than ever!!!  Currently she works at the Portland Waldorf School accompanying the Eurhythmy classes and teaches private lessons and plays with a wonderful group called "Bodacious"....an eclectic blues/Cajun/anything goes group!  They have just finished producing their first CD called "Love's De' Bottom Line"

She also continues to work as a single, playing piano and guitar, singing...and writing tunes and hoping for a more peaceful world!

Doug Stickler

Throughout high school, he also performed at The Rheinlander, The Little Blarney Castle, and The Chateau La France.

After 10 yrs playing The Matterhorn Restaurant, he began working with other musicians in various combos. These have included Zydeco music with the band Bodacious; Italian opera and Neapolitan love songs with tenor, Tim Tommaso; as an accompanist for Joan Szymco's Veriditas Choir; and with Cliff Farley's Swiss Choir. He also plays in a Duo setting with violinist Frank Holman or guitarist Rouke Vanderveen. He has also been a studio musician, appearing on various CD's.

Most of his work these days is with Bodacious. Band members include Julie McCarl, Rouke Vanderveen, (who is lead guitarist with Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts), and Marvella McPartland. This versatile band is mostly a blues/boogie band that plays anything from Clifton Chenier Zydeco to Chuck Berry and rock and roll.

Bodacious has also worked together in other settings including becoming an Irish band for McMenamin's St. Patrick's Day celebrations, and a German band for the Polkafest at the Paesano Club in Cedarville Park.

His repertoire includes German, Swiss, Scandinavian, Irish, Italian, French, Zydeco/Blues, and Jazz Standards, primarily from the 1930's and 40's.

He is comfortable playing in most ethnic settings as a soloist, in a band, or any combination of the two. He plays acoustically as a soloist, but uses amplification when he plays in a band.
