About The Beaverton Outlaws

own full-scale aircraft? Do you know that Oregon is home to the most successful
line of kit-built aircraft in the US? Do you know that without the pioneering
contributions of Oregon pilots none of this would be possible!?!
Join us to hear the story of Oregon’s most notorious
pioneering pilots, known as the "Beaverton Outlaws." These aviators
literally flew in the face of the federal government in the 1930s when home
built aircraft was marked illegal. This presentation will feature a video
history of these men, complete with oral interviews of the outlaws themselves,
highlighting what it was like to fly in the US at the dawn of aviation. Join us
to discover how these men, through their passion and dedication, forever
changed the face of general aviation, as we know it today.
About the Speaker:
Mark
Baxter (OAHS Board Member), residing in Corvallis with his wife of 36 years,
owns and flies a 1941 Taylorcraft, a two-place, fabric-covered aircraft
designed in the 1930’s, primarily used as a trainer during World War II. He is
also in the process of building a Pietenpol, which is an open-cockpit, all
wood, fabric-covered aircraft designed in 1929. It was planned to utilize a
Ford model A engine as they were plentiful and inexpensive in that era. This
retired public servant, a former firefighter/paramedic, has had a lifelong
interest in aviation. He currently serves on the board of directors of the
Oregon Aviation Historical Society, while also directing as president of the
Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club. Mark enjoys assisting with restoring
the historic aircraft in the collection and acting as valued docent, or
participating in the Collections Committee, educating people about Oregon’s
rich aviation history.
Tim
Talen (OAHS Board Member) is an award-winning historical restorer of antique
aircraft. His work has been recognized by the Experimental Aircraft
Association and the National Aviation Heritage Invitational. He is the founder
of both the Oregon Antique & Classic Aircraft Club and the Oregon Aviation
Historical Society, and his award-winning restorations have graced many covers
of EAA’s Vintage Airplane magazine. This talented renovator has an uncanny
ability to look at any antique part and name the aircraft it came from. In
1984, Tim instigated the successful rebirth of the Oregon Air Tours of the
1930s. Tim Talen was inducted into the Oregon Aviation Hall of Fame in 2010 and
then, in 2014 he became the 30th person, nationwide, inducted into the Vintage
Aircraft Association’s Hall of Fame.
