Presented by Eric Schuck, professor of economics, Linfield College
The US Navy’s victory at Midway is often described as a ‘miracle’. But sometimes miracles are made, and they are made through better decision-making. By using economics – the study of choice – to analyze the Battle of Midway, it is possible to learn how the US Navy’s management of time, space and force ultimately proved better than the decision-making processes of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and how better battlefield management led to a seemingly improbable victory.
About the Speaker:
Eric Schuck teaches economics and environmental studies at Linfield College. His research focuses on water use during droughts, controlling agricultural runoff and irrigation technology. He is the recipient of two Fulbright fellowships, in the Middle East and Africa, to teach or develop curriculum about water resource management. He has also focused on the economics of surface water pricing and wells, and consumer spending and behavior at a regional farmers’ market.
These monthly, free events are open to everyone interested in Oregon and Pacific Northwest history. Co-sponsored by like-minded historical and civic organizations, we bring you experts, scholars, first-person experiencers and historians who expound on topics from Lewis and Clark to shipwrecks, hop growing to women pioneers and far, far beyond. It's like being back in the classroom - except this time you get to settle into comfortable seats and enjoy a drink or two with dinner while you listen and learn.
This event is eligible for a History Pub Stamp
