The Melvins

The Melvins

The Melvins formed in Aberdeen/Montesano, WA in 1983 the founding members were Buzz, Mike Dillard (drums), and ex-Mudhoney bassist Matt Lukin. Buzz, Mike, and Matt all went to high school in Montesano. The name Melvins came from a grocery clerk at the Thriftway in Montesano where King Buzzo served as clerk and vandal. Melvin was the most hated fellow employee and they felt it to be an appropriately ridiculous name.

When Mike couldn't cut it, as rumor has it because the songs were getting too mathematically complex, Dale was recruited out of the Iron Maiden cover band he played in at the age of 15. Matt was replaced by Lori Black (Lorax) (Shirley Temple's daughter) when they left Aberdeen for San Francisco.

The Melvins have had quite a few bass player changes during their tenure. Check out the Melvins Bassist Morgue to learn more. The Melvins live in Hollywood, CA right now.

The Melvins Discography is an exhaustive resource of their many releases. They were on a major label Atlantic Records for three albums, although most would agree they're not the type of band that would appeal to a major label. They are often quoted as knowing this while they were on the label and just took advantage of the drunken blitz the record companies were on in signing any band connected to a supposed Seattle "grunge" sound. Melvins have also released music on Ipecac Recordings, Boner Records, Alchemy Records, Amphetamine Reptile Records, Alternative Tentacles Records, and numerous others in the manner of 7"s and whatnot.

Buzz has a side project called Fantômas with Mike Patton (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle) who is also owner of Ipecac Recordings the label the melvins are currently releasing material through. He also played guitar in the hardcore/grind "supergroup" Venomous Concept, featuring members/former members of Napalm Death and Brutal Truth (also released through Ipecac).

Dale filled in for Nirvana when they were between drummers, he appears on Incesticide and Bleach as a result of those sessions. Dale has two major side projects one called Altamont in which he sings and plays guitar. The other he drums in and is known as PORN (The Men Of) or just PORN.

Melvins have toured with KISS, White Zombie, NIN, L7, Primus, Tool, and Rush, among others and were also on the Ozzfest tour in 98. They toured with a second guitarist at one point David Scott Stone (a great noisician). Former bassist Kevin Rutmanis (1998 - early 2005) used to be in the band Cows, he was also in another Mike Patton project along with Duane Denison of the Jesus Lizard called Tomahawk. If you ever get the chance to see them live be sure to give them gifts, they prefer Cracker Barrel gift certificates.

KHôRADA

KHôRADA

Following the abrupt dissolution of the world renown, post-black-metal band, Agalloch, and the indefinite hiatus of the critically acclaimed, cult, doom-rock band, Giant Squid, a new band - KHôRADA - was formed. In August of 2016, the formation of the band was announced to great excitement and surprise among the metal world.

~ INVISIBLE ORANGES - Introducing: KHôRADA (ex-Agalloch, Giant Squid) ~

KHôRADA features Don Anderson (guitar), Aesop Dekker (drums), and Jason Walton (bass) of Agalloch, with Giant Squid frontman, Aaron John Gregory (guitar and vocals).

Upon forming, the band immediately started writing their debut album entitled, SALT, and quickly penned a deal with German based label, Prophecy Productions, to release it.

KHôRADA entered The Hallowed Halls recording studio in Portland, Oregon in July of 2017 with legendary producer, Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Agalloch, Pallbearer) and completed the basic tracking for SALT. Remaining guitar and vocal work was recorded in Oakland at Sharkbite Studios, also with Billy Anderson at the helm, and the neighboring Antisleep Studios with producer Scott Evans.?

The album features guest appearances by the following members of Giant Squid; Jackie Perez Gratz on cello, Andrew Southard on keys, Nate Perkins on trumpet, and Bryan Beeson providing transitional noise pieces.

All album artwork was done by renown San Francisco artist, Cedric Wentworth.

SALT was released by Prophecy Productions on July 20th, 2018 to vast international acclaim which often described the album as a profoundly emotional, completely unique take on progressive metal.

In December of 2018, KHôRADA played its first live performances ever in support of YOB in San Francisco and Portland.

Wizard Rifle

Wizard Rifle

From the rain and gloom of Portland was spawned Wizard Rifle; two malcontent twenty-somethings with a bent on creating something exhilarating and progressive amidst a scene of tepid dreamy pop, and redundant revival acts.

Drummer Sam Ford is a blur of tom rolls, rapid-fire rim shots, screaming out harmonies amid the flurry. Meanwhile guitarist Max Dameron spews out tentacles of noise, at times angular yet bizarrely groovy, at times psychedelic ambience, or purely crushing space-rock. The sheer sonic wall created by two is a sight to behold live, both members sharing signing duties and pushing to the limit of their abilities and ears.

The sound is rooted in a reverence for 70's psychedelic and punk, and myriad contemporary acts without ever feeling like a throwback. Wizard Rifle seeks to push the boundaries beyond reference points and obvious nods to rock idols, but they've commonly been likened to King Crimson, Lightning Bolt, High on Fire, Misfits, Karp, Melvins, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Sleep.

Last year, the lads relocated to Los Angeles, and immediately started work on their next album. Recruiting David Bow on bass, "Here in the Deadlights" was tracked by Max over three weeks at Breakfast studio in LA, then toiled over for a year, with Billy Anderson and Jesse Johnstone sharing mixing duties. The album sees Wizard Rifle pushing its sound into the sludge and reaching new levels of monolithic heaviness, while maintaining a propulsive groove which spins and twists upon itself. Tracks range from two to ten minutes, encompassing everything from sprawling psychedelic epics to surf-sludge noise-romps.

Eight Bells

Eight Bells

Eight Bells was forged in 2010 in Portland, Oregon by Melynda Jackson as an experimental metal songwriting project that bloomed from the ashes of her previous act, Subarachnoid Space. Though band members have shifted, Eight Bells' unique sound, a fusion of progressive rock, doom, and post black metal combined with powerful ambient atmospheres has only continued to evolve, with Jackson as the constant. Known as an off center and innovative musician, the bands first two records, 2013's The Captains Daughter and the much evolved  2016 followup Landless conjure up emotive and often bleakly atmospheric soundscapes. Eight Bells take a thematic approach that results in powerful and deeply evocative music.

This newest iteration may not be the one fans saw tour with Voivod, but aficionados claim that it certainly feels like an upgrade. The band debuted 3 new songs at a rare live appearance at Psycho Las Vegas in August of 2018. Eight Bells continue break from the pack exploring the natural tones and grand visions of the 1970s combined with contemporary metal, haunting female vocals and a 19th-century ghostliness, resulting in a sound that transcends genre and time entirely.

Discography:

The Captain's Daughter - 2013

Landless - 2016

Lineup:

Guitar/Vocals: Melynda Jackson
Keyboards/Vocals: Melynda Amann

Bass/Vocals: Alyssa Maucere

Drums: Brian Burke

Holy Grove

Holy Grove

Holy Grove is pushing heavy rock into exciting new realms on II, their second full-length record, and first for Ripple Music. Recording again with "engine-ear" Billy Anderson (Sleep, Swans), the members of Holy Grove continue to blur the lines between classic heavy metal, doom and prog, unafraid to take long, strange trips, peel off hot-shit guitar solos, or scream as if their lives depend on it.
II bridges the gap between Holy Grove's gritty heavy blues past and their darker cosmic present. First single "Solaris" summons the best of Holy Grove-tight riffs, interludes, and a groove that has already proven to induce fist-raising and headbanging. Opener "Blade Born" is a bone-crusher of a rock 'n' roll song (if the chorus doesn't hook itself into your fleshy pleasure centers, that smoking guitar solo will), and the cowbell kicker on "Aurora" takes you down to a beer-bust in Hades. Once you get to the meticulously constructed "Valley of the Mystics" (a fantastical nod to The Dark Crystal), the unexpected turns will make you feel as if you're floating one second, and being violently hurled through space the next. The aptly titled "Cosmos" is a space rock masterpiece that features ghostly vocals from Vidal and Yob's Mike Scheidt. Listen closely and you can hear the song disintegrating as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere.
This is the work of true believers in the power of rock 'n' roll. The fact we're talking about Holy Grove in 2018 is a testament to that spirit (they came together six years ago as strangers, and have since grown as humans and musicians into a tight-knit family). It took four years to finally release their self-titled debut, which was met with local and national acclaim in the spring of 2016. The band went on to storm stages in the United States and Europe in a mass of swinging hair and raw power (the band has shared the stage with the likes of Yob, Royal Thunder, and Witch Mountain).
Even while searching for a new drummer in late-2016 the band still played the massive Psycho Las Vegas festival. And they never stopped working. Guitarist Trent Jacobs and bassist Gregg Emley continued to write and massage the songs that would become II, and vocalist Andrea Vidal started writing her most personal and mystical lyrics to date. By June of 2017 powerhouse drummer Eben Travis entered the fray, joining Emley to make one of the most formidable rhythms sections in heavy rock. That foundation allows Jacobs to roam freely on guitar. As for Vidal, she delivers her most searing vocal performance to date, one that's equally indebted to Ann Wilson as it is Tina Turner. And that isn't hyperbole-Vidal knocked out all her vocals on the first take (!). Billy Anderson's assured but gentle touch allows all the pieces to breathe and sweat like a bombastic Holy Grove live set.
II is a culmination of the trials of life. But mostly it's the result of the love and dedication (and, perhaps, the killer record collections) of the four individuals involved. This is album number two, but it feels like this is only the beginning for Holy Grove.

Year of the Cobra

Year of the Cobra

Formed in 2015, Year of the Cobra became a rapidly ascending, radiant star in the horizon of the doom/stoner-scene for a reason: This powerhouse duo, consisting of Amy Tung Barrysmith (vocals/ bass) and Jon Barrysmith (drums), use their limitation in instrumentation to their advantage. Leaving space for every instrument to breathe and to shine, they create a vast, larger than life sound aesthetic. Their songs drift relentlessly from classic epic doom laments into oppressive heavy riff architecture; from catchy, almost upbeat rock moments into transfiguring psychedelia.
In 2016, just a year and one EP into their career, Year of the Cobra released their full-length debut, ...in the Shadows Below. Using the natural, three-dimensional and massively heavy production of Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Sleep) they present themselves as an unbelievably mature and confident band who knows exactly what they want. Following their sophomore EP Burn Your Dead, they had successful tours of Europe and the US, playing a number of well-known festivals along the way, including Psycho Las Vegas, Freak Valley Festival, and Stoned Meadow of Doom. They are currently working on new material for their 2019 follow-up full length with legendary engineer/producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Tad, Soundgarden). The band will also hit the road hard in 2019, touring with High on Fire, supporting their Electric Messiah U.S. Tour.

Eye of Nix

Eye of Nix

Formed in the Pacific Northwest in 2012, EYE OF NIX has released two albums and a demo EP to date and has shared the stage with artists like Voivod, Alcest, Jarboe, King Dude, Worm Ouroboros, Sabbath Assembly, and Eight Bells. The band's creative intent is to craft music that is threatening, beautiful, and harsh through mesmerizing rhythms, emotive melodies, and intense dynamics.

The 2017 album Black Somnia was recently re-issued by established German/US label Prophecy when signing EYE OF NIX to their roster. The album centers on themes of fear, control, and anxiety while shape-shifting through a lens of blackened psychedelia and doom. The band collaborated with ritual visual artist Anima Nocturna and an international group of Butoh dance artists to create the album's stunning artwork.

EYE OF NIX has appeared at Northwest Terror Fest, Thirst For Light, Prophecy Fest US, and toured the western states and northeast. In 2018, founding vocalist Joy Von Spain, guitarist Nicholas Martinez, and sound artist Masaaki Masao were joined by bassist Zach Wise (Hissing) and drummer Luke LaPlante.

"...atmospheric, ambitious melodic black metal meets thoughtful, midnight-tinted doom, stately neocrust, and ghostly vintage goth in a perfect danse macabre..." - Noisey

"Von Spain's operatic vocal tendencies make it epic, the psychedelia embedded in it makes it hypnotic, and the blackness and sludge creates a harsh abrasiveness." - Invisible Oranges

"Interesting samples add atmosphere and an overall uneasy sonic mood commensurate with Von Spain's lyrical meditations on fear and discomfort. Occasional harmonized vocals and synthesizer melodies slice through the record's gloom. The result is a mature musical journey with a surprisingly varied emotional palate." - The Stranger

"...a heart-stopping experience, a record that combines all the shadowy forces we fear and delivers them in a moving, massive presentation. It's not every day we get bands that truly stand on their own, but EYE OF NIX is one of them, and they're a force with which the world might not be fully ready to contend." - Meat Mead Metal

Hound The Wolves

Hound The Wolves

With metal manifesting itself through tons of textures and types, finding a way to attentively stay afloat in a sea of subgenres is a feat of particular approach and expertise. What started as an art project among friends has transformed into the full-blown heavy rock experience of Portland's Hound the Wolves.

Formed in 2015, Hound the Wolves likens much of the climate that surrounds them, pulling euphonic inspiration from the mysterious and clandestine maneuvers that occur behind the shroud of darkness. Principal songwriter t.h.ghost incorporates occultism, numerology, and sacred geometry as leitmotifs common in the band's songs, matching the perseverance of man, acceptance of societal ills and the discovery of light in darkness written as recurring lyrical themes. These elements find themselves translated sonically through droned patterns, earthy and worldly rhythmic density and meditative, cyclical repetition that make for a haunted psych-metal experience.

Camera Obscura is the first Hound the Wolves release. Though the band members have all participated in other such bands as Sioux, Mane of the Cur, A//tar, and Tigers on Opium presently and in the past, Camera Obscura marks the culmination of their collective proclivity towards heavy mantra jams and expression rooted in conceptual contrast.

"The moon gives chase, but the wolf's howl can guide us there."

hosted by Danger Ehren

Ehren McGhehey (DANGER EHREN) was born in McMinnville Oregon in the winter months of 1976. He has two older sisters and his parents are morticians. Growing up above a mortuary for the majority of his youth he learned a lot about life, death and how to prank people when they are least expecting it. After learning how to skateboard when he was 12 he took up snowboarding at the age of 15 and by age 18 was sponsored and well on his way to becoming a washed up pro snowboarder.

After breaking his neck, shoulder, and knees snowboarding, he realized he needed to find a new career. At the age of 22 while working at a skate shop in Portland, Ehren was filming and creating ideas that would soon become legendary, or at least dumb enough to make people laugh. He joined forces with the creative minds behind one the world's most idiotic, (GENIUS), shows ever to hit the airwaves (JACKASS).

As we all know Jackass was an instant hit on MTV and Ehren was about to embark on the wildest ride you could ever imagine. Through being a part of Jackass he has seen the world, worked with great people, and experienced things that would make babies cry, men wet their pants. Currently Ehren is touring with bands and working with many brands as a photographer/videographer. He lives fast, he lives free, and he eats his own pee...well the pee thing was a only one time! ;)

Not bad for a kid who grew up playing in caskets. Remember:  SAFETY FIRST!!!!!!!!!
