The Strange Tones

The wildly entertaining Strange Tones have blended a unique concoction of original blues, rockabilly, surf, and vintage R&B, and finished it off with a private eye twist. They've shaken and stirred these elements into their own original sound and style known as Crime-A-Billy. Well-crafted songwriting, top notch musicianship, and a playful, engaging stage show have contributed to the band's induction into the Hall of Fame (Cascade Blues Association), and a multitude of awards for "Best Contemporary Blues Act", "Best Electric Guitar", "Best Northwest Recording", and "Best Vocals".

Led by the husband-and-wife team of Guitar Julie & bassist Andy Strange, and fortified by longtime partners guitarist Suburban Slim and drummer Andy Gauthier, this group forms "... one of Portland's most original and accomplished bands." - Oregonian

"....this too-cool-for-school quartet are a guaranteed good time, mixing sizzling surf, righteous rockabilly and secret-agent-man sang froid. There are zillions of bands in this naked city, but very few sound as good as the Strange Tones over a pitcher of beer and a greasy cheeseburger." - Portland Monthly Magazine

"If surf guitar god Dick Dale found himself in Bogie's Maltese Falcon film-noir underworld, and drank beer at the seedy bar with bluesmen Jimmy Reed and Magic Sam, the resulting soundtrack might be exactly what the Strange Tones purvey." - Oregonian

"With the exception of the grunge movement, some people don't realize what a fertile breeding ground the northwest was and still is for great talent, sprouting such artists as Heart, The Wailers, The Sonics and Paul Revere and the Raiders, not to mention Jimi Hendrix. Well, you can count on The Strange Tones to keep the northwest's rep solid." - Elmore Magazine

Los Supremos De Los Hermanos Flores

Los Supremos De Los Hermanos Flores

Founded in the mid 1970’s by three Flores brothers from the Woodburn area, Los Supremos de los Hermanos Flores has been performing up-tempo, toe-tapping dance music throughout the Pacific NW ever since..  Their Conjunto-Tejano sound transcends not only generations, but also racial boundaries.

The current band is made up of seasoned musicians that share a passion for what they do and take the extra time to bring the audience into the “Supremos” fold.  They incite the audience to smile, tap and yes, dance, dance, dance!

LOS SUPREMOS BAND MEMBERS

Bajo Sexto & Vocals; PAUL DURKETT:

Paul started out as a folk singer in 1962, and then in 1968 he switched to rhythm & blues. He plays blues harmonica & guitar.  Durkett fell in love with Tejano music after listening to Little Joe y La Familia, soon learned to play the Bajo Sexto and started singing in Spanish. He recently relocated to Portland, Or.  On his first weekend in Portland, he heard the familiar sounds of Tejano music as he listened to KBOO radio.  He started calling in & requesting songs.  Those calls eventually led to a connection from  the DJ’s to the Flores brothers.  Paul is now a full-time member of Los Supremos de Los Hermanos Flores and has incorporated the Bajo Sexto, Bajo Quinto, guitar and harmonica into the band.

Drummer & Vocals: DENNIS YBARRA:

Dennis comes from a family of musicians and has always had a passion for music.  He grew up watching his dad Pete Ybarra perform Tejano music throughout his life. This led him to learn how to play several musical instruments.  As a teenager he had the opportunity to play alongside his dad, which gave them both great pleasure and honor.  In his 20’s his father passed away. Dennis was lead to take the reigns of his father’s band (Suave Band).  Dennis recently joined Los Supremos and is looking forward to great things.

Bass; Alberto (Beto) Flores:

Beto, has been playing bass for over 14 years, and has had the good fortune to train with industry’s greats as Skip Battin of The Byrds, Gary Fontaine of Nu Shooz and Melvin of the Dan Reed Network.

Albert has also worked with and recorded albums for Rick Caliar (El Debarge of Motown Records) and joined Rick in the Gospel Choir Band at Newsong Church.
When Albert is not spending time with his wife and daughter, he can be found rehearsing, playing the Portland club scene and sampling local microbrews.

Vocals; Nasario Flores:

Nasario has been in the music business for many years. He started out as a DJ, dance promoter and then along with his brothers Emilio and Margil, created the bandm, Los Supremos De los Hermanos Flores. Nasario was the band’s lead singer in the 70’s  He continues to lend his vocals & stage persona to the band.

Accordion & Vocals; Margil Flores:

Margil has been a lover of music since his childhood.  He bought his first guitar when he was only 12 years old.  He has participated in many contests taking top honors in singing and playing.  As a founding member of Los Supremos de los Hermanos Flores, Margil brings musical passion and expertise.  In the early 80’s, the band found itself without an accordion player, Margil jumped at the chance of mastering a new musical instrument.  In less than a few months, Margil was front and center playing accordion & singing.  His passion for Conjunto music comes across when he picks up the accordion goes through a few rifts and let’s his vocals do the magic.

Rich Layton & Tough Town

Rich Layton & Tough Town

Rich Layton & Tough Town are keepers of the flame for American roots music. It's high octane swamp rock, country, rockabilly and the honky tonk blues echoing from an East Texas roadhouse. The band has a signature sound that sits right alongside such eclectic artists as Marty Stuart, Shooter Jennings and Lukas Nelson. Each set takes audiences for a ride from Sun Studios to Chess Records, and Muscle Shoals to Bakersfield. Rich's original songs fit seamlessly into the mix, weaving his Gulf Coast roots through tales of rock and roll redemption, harmonica-fueled and swampified.

Together over a decade now, the band has released three albums and performs at major festivals and showcase clubs throughout the Northwest.  Each year, Rich joins Lyle Lovett as a special guest when Lyle tours the NW. Rich also has played on Portland tour stops by his long-time friends Lucinda Williams, Buckwheat Zydeco (R.I.P.), Dale Watson and many more.
