Mars Retrieval Unit

Mars Retrieval Unit

Mars Retrieval Unit returns to the stage after an extended "permanent" breakup, having last performed on New Year's Eve 2011/2012. Everyone took off running in separate directions, creating an ever-expanding, intricate web of musical acts performing around Portland and the entire Pacific Northwest.

Beginning as a 3-piece in Northern Florida in the early winter of 2004, and relocating to Portland the next spring, MRU rapidly established itself as a jam-crushing party powerhouse, headlining the local and regional festival circuit from 2006 through 2011. Throw-downs included several years each of Mountain Stomp, Space Rock Mountain Melt, Gemini Fest, Oregon Brewfest, (to name just a few), all the while touring from Eugene OR to Seattle and Spokane WA, to Whitefish and Missoula MT, and areas between.

November of 2010 saw their debut studio album Two Sides released to the world, with a high energy CD release party at McMenamins' Crystal Ballroom, in Portland, Oregon featuring a full horn section and several other guests.

Drawing influences from such diverse acts as Herbie Hancock to Pink Floyd, Parliament-Funkadelic to Rush, Yes, Frank Zappa, Phish, Steely Dan, and Talking Heads (to name a few), their original music has more of a composed feel than a "song" vibe, while the band maintains the looseness of improvisation and the desire to explore the structure of the songs.

In winter of 2017, a communication link was re-established between band members, and in late spring, rehearsals began in preparation for a return to the music world of Portland Oregon!

The location that serves as one of McMenamins favorite neighborhood theater pubs was the locus of great spiritual zeal beginning in the 1890s. That's when the Swedish Evangelical Mission established its church here....

From a church to a theater-pub, the Mission's history ain't exactly saintly. Click here for more info!
