Chris Robley

"(Robley's) gothic, orchestral indie-pop is sure to leave heads spinning with its unique and haunting sound." - NPR

"Poetic, evocative." - LA Times

"A spirited musical presence." - Performer Magazine

Former Portland mainstay Chris Robley returns to the Rose City for seven nights of melodic and literate pop music, celebrating the release of his new album The Great Make Believer.

With The Great Make Believer, Robley breaks five years of musical silence, as he re-unites with old friends and collaborators to perform a seven-night residency at Al's Den, the former speakeasy turned cozy listening room in downtown Portland.

Depending on the night, Robley will deliver his smart pop songs with the raw intimacy of a solo singer-songwriter, with the help of a few guests, or with a full band (plus backup singers). And each night, Chris will be visiting a different mile-marker in his musical life, centering his set lists around specific albums from his discography, and paying tribute to several of his influences.

More than five years separate the release of The Great Make Believer from his previous album, years of both heartbreak and renewal - including a divorce, remarriage, moving back east to be closer to his parents while his dad battles cancer, and even becoming a father himself.

"Around the time I put out my last album, my life was kinda exploding," Robley says. "Much of that was chaos of my own making, but it was far from self-contained. I guess a simpler way to say it is I hurt people I cared about - and the pain of causing other people pain is a tricky thing to work through." He continues "Over the next few years, songwriting became a way for me to heal from what had happened. But actually releasing the music took a backseat to some bigger things going on that were far more important than me putting out another album. Just life, trumping art."
During his time in Oregon, Robley fronted his own group The Fear of Heights and the agitprop-pop band THE SORT OFs. He also performed as a member of The Imprints, Norfolk & Western, Stereovision, and with songwriter Rachel Taylor Brown. He produced albums by artists like Little Beirut and jazz trumpeter James Gregg; and he played on dozens of studio recordings by other Pacific Northwest musicians (Mike Coykendall, Nick Peets, etc).
