About The Fight for a Farmers’ Market: A Hundred years of Produce and Politics

Presented by: Laura Ferguson, Ph.D., Curator of Western History at the High Desert Museum, McMenamins History, Deschutes Historical Museum and Oregon Historical Society

Today we think of farmers' markets as beloved community spaces, full of locally grown, artisanal foods. But it wasn't always that way. At the turn of the twentieth century, farmers were often at odds with city planners, who saw markets as "disorderly and dirty." In San Francisco, one especially heated fight played out over a space that is today the site of a prosperous market, which revived an entire neighborhood. Come hear about the more complicated past of what has become an urban mainstay.

About the Speaker:

She holds a B.S. from Oregon State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
