Ben Larsen (of Crow and the Canyon)

Ben Larsen has been a fixture on the Portland music scene for nearly a decade.. Raised in New England (where his first instrument in grade three was the clarinet) and Jakarta, Indonesia, he moved to Portland in 2006 to attend Lewis and Clark College to study jazz guitar, Larsen's musical journey has not been a direct one. After two years studying jazz, he shifted his focus to the mandolin, concentrating on Bach violin sonatas and the choro music of Brazil's early 20th century. After graduating in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in mandolin performance, Larsen began to embed himself in the local folk and bluegrass scene.

Along with a three year stint in Renegade Stringband, developing the Giraffe Dodgers from the ground up, serving as Twisted Whistles' fiddler and mandolin player for a year, Larsen has sat in countless times with Fruition, Left Coast Country, Kory Quinn, the Grant Farm, Allie Kral and Friends, the Wild Wood, the Fire Weeds and several other area folk musicians and bands of all genres. Larsen is currently focusing on a new, well-received band, Crow and the Canyon as well as his solo career. He is available for lessons on guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

Hunter White of Cascade Crescendo

Hunter White of Cascade Crescendo

Cascade Crescendo, from Portland, Oregon has been crafting their own brand of bluegrass since 2013. Pulling from their vast range of collective influences, they play original, high-energy bluegrass, jam, and Americana music with captivating lead vocals by Hunter White, blazing fast mandolin licks by Aden Beck, and creative, thumping bass lines by Taylor Skiles. Duluth, MN banjo player, Harrison Olk (formerly of Tin Can Gin) joined the band in late 2015, bringing with him solid Scruggs-style banjo sounds and high lonesome harmony vocals.

Cascade Crescendo recorded their first studio album in Spring 2016 at The Hallowed Halls in Portland, OR. The album features fiddle player, Allie Kral (Yonder Mountain String Band) on five tracks and a guest appearance by drummer Nick Werth (Yak Attack, Ghost-Note). Cascade Crescendo is gaining steam in 2016, quickly winning over fans across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. They performed at the 2016 Northwest String Summit and are touring the West Coast this summer and fall.

Cascade Crescendo has... "gained a loyal following with their tightly crafted bluegrass that embraces tradition alongside more progressive, jam-oriented styles." - Glide Magazine

The new album "Caught in the Rain"... "is an impressive debut for this young band and one that leaves you wondering what they will be capable of as they continue to grow as musicians." - Glide Magazine

"Caught in the Rain"... "serves up more than enough fine harmony vocals and lightning-fast banjo and mandolin work to suggest they have what it takes to make a name for themselves." -Jeff Burger, No Depression
