About The Malheur Occupation and Public Lands in the American West

The Malheur Occupation and Public Lands in the American West

Presented by: Bill Robbins

About the Presentation:
Join Professor Bill Robbins for a presentation on the creation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge and the continuing struggle over management of public lands in the West. A continuation of earlier protests, the roots of the Malheur Occupation of 2016 can be found in the history of Harney County, from the arrival of cattle in the late 19th century through the Great Depression, the creation of the refuge and the passage of the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934.

About the Speaker:
Bill Robbins is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of History at Oregon State University and author and editor of several books, including Colony and Empire: The Capitalist Transformation of the American West (1994); Landscapes of Promise: The Oregon Story, 1800–1940 (1997); Landscapes of Conflict: The Oregon Story 1940–2000 (2004); and The People's School: A History of Oregon State University (2017).
